Safe Throw - don't use accurate AFTER a 2 is rolled?

Post by funnyfingers »

When do you have to declare that you are using accurate during a pass. With most actions it seems you choose them when you need them. When you block you don't say I am using the block skill first. You block then you choose.

It seems this would be against the intention of the skill, but thought I would bring it up.

If a player has 3 AG, safe throw, strong arm, and accurate and does a long bomb and rolls a 2 can he then choose not to use accurate in order to fumble the ball and keep it in his hands?

you can choose to use or not to use a skill (a few exceptions like Frenzy of course)

When though? Don't you think choosing not to use accurate after the roll fudges safe throw a bit?

nope, use skills after the cast of the die
you use pass after the fact ....
ps consult the AG chart, you roll, add the modifiers
Look up the player’s Agility on the Agility table to find the score
required to successfully pass the ball. Roll a D6, and add or
subtract any of the modifiers that apply to the D6 roll. A roll of 1
before modification always fails and a roll of 6 before
modification always succeeds
(pg 12 of the rules)

So in this case with strong arm and accurate a bomb is less risky than a long pass.

Long Bomb is less risky than a Long Pass in this case.

sorry I did not read the long pass
so you are saying:
Long Bomb (w/skills) of Ball
Lang Pass (w/skills) of Bomb

Ball is better:
you do not fumble or (mostly) intercept

Bomb:
no safe throw = KaBomb, also cannot prevent Interception

nothing to do with a bomb, this is all balls :)

But I was given inaccurate info on that so forget my long bomb vs long pass.

I just want to know if this is the intention of safe throw. I just don't think it is...

You can use any skill after the roll of the dice is made. You do not have to pick before hand at all.

If it is a fumble from anything other than a natural 1 then safe throw lets you keep hold of it and avoids the turnover

you choose to use all skills after the dice has been rolled (unless using that skill means you then roll a dice like shadowing obv)

so yes if you roll a 2 and it would be a fumble due to the negative modifiers you keep hold of it

so if you wanted to not use accurate to keep hold of ball instead of it being inaccurate, then there is no problem doing that

safe throw was made worse than before as it nearly always cancelled out interceptions, so the keeping hold of it for some fumbles was a new side of it added

not quite sure how else you can interpret it...

The minutiae of at what point you declare, add or subtract modifiers, etc. on tight rolls - even if you're completely right the first time - can quickly turn into one of those RAW/RAI discussions, usually on something crucial.

Confusion probably arises because we initially think 'oh I need a 3+ for this, because of my skills', then when we roll the dice and get a 2, the cogs start turning, we starting thinking about the potential outcomes, and we quickly realise we've unnecessarily complicated matters!

well apart from throwing, iirc everything else is a pass or fail situation

only passing has the inaccurate option to go along with the pass (accurate) and fail (fumble)

Blocking has variations between pass and fail
- a Push Back is a "pass" when you need to stay on your feet, but a "fail" when you need your opponent down.
- or get Defender Stumbles when you have Frenzy and watch your opponent debate using his Dodge skill or go down to avoid the crowd surf (Some of the faces coaches make are fantastic. You can actually see their brains cramping!)

But I may have digressed . . .
