Skills - why not allow the same skill to be purchased twice?

Post by celticgriffon »

Hey everyone,

I was just thinking about skills. What were the arguments for not allowing a skill to be purchased twice (or more)?

It may lead to some new builds and creativity in the game.

What like a Mummy getting Mighty Blow on every skill-up?

There is no-way that could ever be abused

Loki - yes, the rules as they stand would allow abuse on MB. But, it would be easy to put a clarifier on MB saying you can only use this once max / per block.

I guess I am thinking about other skills - perhaps break tackle. It would potentially be very useful to have twice on a certain player such as a Bull Centaur.

I think in most cases being able to take something a second time or more, takes it from a boost to changing the dynamic of a player, if not just being plain overpowered.

In most cases I could see it stifiling team builds ie as 'good' skills are chosen multiple times rather than being forced to choose different skills.

I would agree. On a similar note I have often wondered how allowing a doubles role to be used to get rid of a nega-trait would affect the game.

Dodge of course is crazy powerful, but a single tackle skill would negate multiple dodge skills.

The argument against it is that it's a terrible idea.

If you add a rule (skills can be taken multiple times) then have to add exceptions to that rule (MB for example) then that's not a good new rule.

More fiddly is never a good thing I agree. But in today's world many skills already have exceptions and/or state they can only be used once per turn (which in a way is an exception just the same).

I am not saying all my ideas/thoughts are grand - or heck.. even good. But sometimes just throwing things out there leads to some neat developments.

I am not completely convinced allowing a player to take duplicate skills would always be as bad as many think...

I think the main issue for me is that it would just convolute the entire system when working it out. House rule away if you think it's worth it, but I think you're going to find that it will take a long time to work out for not a lot of pay off. Personally, I wouldn't chose to bloat a players TV by selecting the skill more than once for the few times it might save me a dice roll. I'd likely choose to pick a skill that would help me more frequently.

Not just MB. Can you imagine Accurate, Accurate, Accurate on a high elf thrower? The only skills that really stack are all open to abuse, as I see it.

IMO opinion the game already has too many fiddly exceptions and could use less of them - Piling On re-rolls the un-re-rollable, Juggernaut doesn't work on Side Step (I agree thematically, but not mechanically) for example. Existence of bad policy shouldn't be an excuse to create more.

This isn't an argument! It's just contradiction!

Two Heads stacks nicely. Two Heads, Four Heads, Six Heads, why not? Six heads, IMAGINE how awesome you'd be at getting through tight spaces without falling down! Extra Arms, Extra Arms, Extra Arms... you could pick up the ball like a freakin Hindu god! (They're wicked at picking up stuff btw.)

We would of course need a Badger skill for this idea to be properly implemented.
