The Draft

Post by Flashover »

Has anybody played with a draft system? Before each season starts, teams can pick from a list of limited skills or bennies. New teams pick first, followed by the teams with the worst record to the team with the best record. The idea being to help boost those teams that need it.
The idea of coaches vying for skills/team bennies appeals to me. It's kind of like a game in and of itself. Has anyone seen anything like this?

Back when there were only 12 team races and we could get 20-coach leagues going in San Diego, we had a seasonal draft, after a resetting season. Even after that we continued to have a draft, but it really disguised a semi-perpetual format. LRB5 kind of obviated that, but even then, we talked about having a draft.

1) Split all players up into five of the six basic positional types (Linemen, Blockers, Blitzers, Catchers, Throwers) plus an added "Big Guys" category for ST5+ players with either Claws or Mighty Blow (TGs are Blockers). Some players may have two categories. For instance, Dwarf Blockers are Linemen and Blockers, while Goblins are Linemen and Catchers. Runners become either Catchers (A-access added, like GRs and Norse) or Throwers (P-access added, like Dwarfs and DE).

2) Each player position gets 6 players, numbered 1-6, save Linemen, who get 8 players, numbered 1-8. Each such player gets an MVP. Each position gets (1d6+X)/2 MVP awards distributed randomly, where X is the number of teams in the draft. Roll a d6 for each player at each position (or a d8 for Linemen).

3) Roll for each of these improvements, noting the result as an ordered pair.

4) Begin a draft. Edited below this line.

4a) In the first season, establish a "Rochester" format, with each coach drafting four players. Randomize the order of drafting in the first round, then again in the third round. Then establish the second and fourth as the mirror-image of the preceding rounds. For instance, if you have 6 coaches A-F and the first round comes out A, B, C, D, E, F, then the second round would be F, E, D, C, B, A. Randomize the first and third rounds before drafting, so coaches can trade picks and whatnot (it may take a few seasons first). Drafted players must be hired at value, or at cost +10k per MVP, whichever is more. Teams may trade picks or money before the draft, though the league takes a 50% cut from money traded from Treasury, and no team may trade away more than 200k gold or gain more than 100k.

4b) In the second and following seasons, apply these rules:
4b.1: Coaches continuing with existing teams receive picks only in the first and third rounds;
4b.2: New coaches pick first in each round. The champion picks last, the second place team second-to-last. After that, it's randomized. This holds true for further rounds.

Example: D beats C in the championship, then two new coaches join in and A and F decide to scrap their teams and start over. The draft order, with randomized groups in parentheses, goes:
Round 1: (G, H), (A, B, E, F), C, D.
Round 2: (H, G), (F, A).
Round 3: (G, H), (A, E, B, F), C, D.
Round 4: (H, G), (F, A).

If coach E decides he'd like more good players and doesn't need the guys with MVPs so much, and coach H wants late picks to use on 5SPP rookies, then H might give E the #2 overall pick in exchange for both of his picks, #5 and #16. Then, he might trade #9 to coach A for #15 and #24, and trade #13 to coach D for #20 and 70k gold (which costs C 140k).
A, the rebuilding coach, gets the third overall pick plus two other experienced players to build around.
D, the champion, gets two skilled players, maybe one with a double or 15 SPP or something, and gives up 140k he probably doesn't need.
E, the continuing also-ran, gets the second overall pick!
H, the new guy, gets an arsenal of leftover picks (#15, #16, #20, #21, #24), plus the #5 overall, and an extra 70k cash to pay for all the MVPs!

5) Each player drafted becomes a player of the appropriate race and player type. If there are multiple applicable player types, the coach may pick any such type. For instance, a Dwarf coach who picked up a Blitzer with a skill could make it a Blitzer or a Slayer.

6) You may want to tinker with Spiraling Expenses.

Drafting works generally best(easier) with a same-race league.

In a all-human league I attended, the three best players(most spp) on each team were up for drafting.

The new teams chose first, then we followed the ranking down-up. Do this three times.
The best players usually goes to the newcomers and the champs get what's left.

Generated some funny tactic: One player with a ST4 blitzer worked hard to make sure that three linos would get more spp than him. Meanwhile he swore anytime he got a cas!

Cool mattgslater, thats some good input. I like the idea of drafting doppelgangers that become the race appropriate position once drafted. Afroman, an all human (scaven, orc, whatever) league is also a pretty good idea. Thanks for the input guys!
