quick idea, 2d6 table for a variety of Referees

Post by anc001 »

2 cowardly, will not send off players for fouling
3 compassionate, slack against fouls by stunties, strict against fouls of stunties
4 slack, only sent off if doubles on injury roll
5-9 normal
10 strict, also sent off on any odd injury roll 3,5,7,9,11
11 violent, when sent off also make an injury roll for the player
12 sadistic, secret weapons only sent off on a 4+

thoughts, ideas, criticism, improvements?

I’m not a huge fan of 11. I don’t think a ref should be able to auto injure players, whilst there are a few ogre refs or psychos with chainsaw most are a lot weedier than the players.

Maybe make it a straight armour roll?

Would these be in combination with changes to the fouling rules? I know many would like +1 for fouling back along with sneaky git being guard for fouls.

Rolling doubles = 1/6 Chance

Rolling an odd result = 1/2 Chance

A strict referee is thus four times more likely to send off someone for fouling. Seems more like a result worthy of snake-eyes.

If your intention was to double the chance to be sent off, then saying "doubles, or a result of 7" would have sufficed.

I have no problems with 11, only I think it should be 12 to get that. (And yes, that clearly is a chain-saw wielding ogre judge)

Cowardly ref feels overly powerful - make it give an extra free bribe insted, and put it on 3?

Sadistic is fun, but I'd rather see "greedy" on 11, bribes fail on 1 or 2. (He wants more money)

have incorperated your ideas, and added a few more.

2 cowardly, the Ref fears for his life if he angers the wrong fans
will not send off players for fouling

3 compassionate, the Ref has a softspot for the little chaps
slack against fouls by stunties, strict against fouls of stunties

4 slack, the Ref doesn't really want to get involved
only sent off if doubles on injury roll

5 impressionable, the Ref plays it safe with the crowd by taking it easy on the favourite
slack against team with FAME (no effect if even)

6 greedy, the Ref is easily corruptable and unlikely to turn down your 'gifts'
bribes automatically work, rather than needing a 2+ roll.

7 Normal

8 straight, the Ref is not as easily swayed as some
bribes fail on a D6 roll of 1 or 2.

9 gambler, the Ref has put a wager on the underdog and plans to help their chances
strict against team with FAME (no effect if even)

10 strict, the Ref is a bit of a stickler for fair play
fouling player also sent off on any injury roll of 7

11 sadistic, the Ref has an appetite for blood
secret weapon players are only sent off on a 4+ after each drive.

12 violent, when opportunity arises the Ref likes to deal out his own brand of justice
when a fouling player is sent off also make an injury roll for the player

we'll be playtesting these for a while, will report back thoughts.

this is working nicely, we have been happy with the balance and the fact that the most likely results to roll up are fairly mild, while the unlikely events make for occasional games where you need to rethink your strategy (just as a good house rule should).
