big sword

Post by Pritchard »

in my group of friends when someone turns 18 their first spoil of all the new legal things we can do is buy a sword. being now 18 its my turn but i want a really nice one, better then everyone elses. i already know about noblecollection.com, which has some nice things but too showy for my tastes. i figured the masters of miniatures would be the ones to also be the masters of life sized. so my questions is this: where online can i order a really cool sword?

Online? Get in your car and head over the border to my hometown, London Ontario. About an hour and a half away from Detroit. We have our own " sword store," Relics, and its quite the place. My buddies from Windsor do all of their sword shopping there and they have reasonable prices.

Musem Replica's (that Mel posted) is a good one, but so is this one.

Just do a search and add words like celtic, viking or saxon.

http://www.swordsonline.com/ is an excellent site. They give lots of discriptive information about all of their swords, and they reply to e-mails quickly, plus it's a nice site.

After watching the movie "The last samurai" yesterday night... yes, i nearly want to own a sword again, too. It was one of my dreams when i was young  and was practiced different martial arts styles. Long time ago... I once got a real katana in my hands, worth 100.000$US. Just for a few minutes in a antique shop... Quite too expensive for me

But what it is worth to own a sword anyway, if you are not trained to handle one ... :(

Exactly what I was thinking. Not flaming, just curious as to why you would want to spend a great deal of money on a sword that you will most likely hang above a fireplace - I can't see anyone shelling out $100,000 for a sword then play fighting with it...??

This special sword was for collectors... like a museum piece. I cant remember how old it was... most of the original katanas left Japan after WWII when GLs took them as souvenirs  No original old katana is allow to leave Japan now... as i knew. No way someone would play around with this expensive blade !! I had to wear gloves and it was cleaned later with talcum and paper from maybe spots of saliva...

I have never dealt with this guy, but I've have heard good things about him. All the way over here in California (he's based on the east coast) I've looked at his catalog and drooled big time.

http://www.lundegaard.com/

His work is renaissance faire sytle, so it'll look pretty real and feel just as hefty (well it is a huge peice of steel you'll be swinging around) and isn't going to one of those flashy, display POS that the knife stores in the mall and noble collection sell.

Most faire sword makers make them so you can beat on each other. I just never had the money to buy them when I was doing faire.

You could always search for faire pages and armourers
OR go check out a Renaissance Farie this spring, they should be popping up in march or april. And you can usually haggle down a price at faire with most of the shops.

Here is one of the old faire sites I used to frequent. I don't know how many, if any of the links are good still but it was pretty f'ing big.

Hope that helps

Do not pass go, do not collect $200. My wife and a few of my friends have fencing weapons from him and they're fantastic. His larger stuff has been well received by the reenactor crowd as well. Some of it is quite lovely and all of it is very functional.

(I'm personally drooling over this. Flexi-sabre. Sweeet...)

Don't know about any of the links provided but I do know that there is a definite difference between real swords and most of those sold in the USA. The easiest way to tell is the price. You aren't getting a real sword for $150.

A link somewhere else (I think the one for the Gimli helmet) had "battle ready" swords for sale for $150...battle ready? Probably not.

To be "battle ready" you'd want something either made with a modern day strong alloy or folded steel. Either way you're gonna pay more $100.

I hope that you really don't need a battle ready sword!

Note the use of the word 'functional' rather than the ever popular 'battle ready'. I was referring to his fencing stuff.

Just a note i my defense.
