Varnish update for anyone intending to use 'Vallejo Polyurethane Matt Varnish'.

Think I've discovered that this stuff needs more than the recommended 24 hours to fully dry! When working on the models on Thursday the varnish was completely touch-dry, and I assumed fully cured as each coat had been given its 24 hour wait. I then went to work on them again tonight, and found that the varnished surfaces are now wet again! With it having been clearly reactivated in some way.

I'm guessing this is to do with the surfaces having been laid flat for the first time, whilst not yet fully dry. Perhaps the pressure from the weight of the models, or lack of air flow has caused whatever liquid was left to evaporate to somehow seep through instead. Not sure obviously, but with both coats of primer having been given 3 days each, I'm fairly certain the varnish is the sole culprit here.

Photo below. You can clearly see how milky some of the varnish has become from being reactivated. On Thursday this was literally jet black and bone dry!

Image

Hopefully it will just fully dry out and wont need to removed and redone. Bit worried it might have to be if the first coat isn't fully set whilst sealed under the second. I'm going to try accelerate the drying with heat from a bulb or something and see if that helps. Anyone else happen to have used this stuff and had a similar experience?

Update (5/11/17)

Laying the models on their side overnight has reverted the varnish back to touch-dry. Going to leave them that way to hopefully fully dry, while I concentrate on getting the second half of the team up to the same state. With at least 3 days to dry between their coats! Once they're done, I'll stand this lot back up for a night and check if this happens again. If it still does after that long a wait, I'll just remove the varnish and redo the bloody things :-?.

Last coat of varnish went on the second half of the team tonight. Giving that 4 days like the one before it, then going to add the basing sand. If that isn't enough time for them to be fully dry then I don't know what is :D.

Base undersides primed and varnished. 3 days of drying time for each coat of primer, and 4 for each coat of varnish.
It cant be seen, but I used double sided tape here to temporarily fix the tops of the models bases to the cocktail sticks. That way I could view the models at different angles during priming without worrying about them sliding around and ruining the wet primer.

Image

I glued the sand with some slightly watered down PVA and a drop of washing up liquid as flow aid. With that fully dried, I then sealed it down with a very watery PVA/washing up liquid wash. Then primed the rest of the model with a coat of the surface primer.

I've nervously decided to prepare my Varag for painting as well! This will be the first time I've painted anything in over 10 years, so I was initially just going to complete the team first, then tackle him once I had some confidence with a brush again. It'd be brilliant to have everything finished at once though, so I'm going to bite the bullet and throw him into the mix.

This is a great extra bonus to having these bases magnetised! With that in mind, I decided to do Varag's as well in case I ever wanted to make use of it. Easy enough to incorporate since I already had to increase the height of his base to match the rest of the team on their 3d printed versions anyway. I can’t have my star being shorter than a common lineman :D

And since he’s playing on my team he should have my logo!

This is where I’m at so far with his base. One more layer of Plasticard left to add to make it the same height as the others. Then I'll work on getting him up to the same point as the rest of the team.

Adding magnets. Taking into account the weight of Varag, I decided to play it safe here and carved out the hole to be able to fit two magnets instead of one.

Made a nice little discovery here with regard to liquid sprue here as well! For anyone unfamiliar, 'liquid sprue' is essentially as it sounds. A filler for styrene, made from styrene itself. Traditionally the instructions for making it are to simply chop up bits of sprue into a small sealed container (like a mini jam jar), add some plastic glue, then leave for some time (preferably overnight) until it’s melted into a goo-like form. Then it can be pasted into any gaps or whathaveyou, and when set can be cut/filed etc, as you’d expect from styrene.

With that little injection dimple on the base to fill, I decided to try knocking some of this up on the spot using the dust left over from filing the rim. And as I’d hoped, because it’s a fine power, it quickly activates with the plastic glue to become filler. Obvious in hindsight really, but nice to now know that the stuff doesn’t have to be prepared beforehand!

Image

As you can probably see, the height of that base is pretty big. When fully based, the team are essentially going to look pretty similar to Heroclicks models (though are still dwarfed by the 2016 versions!). Since Varag’s base won’t be displaying any skills, I wanted to add something to help fill the large empty space on his rim.

I decided to put his name there as seems to be quite common in Blood Bowl for stars. I didn’t go with those styrene letters I have spare, as I really don’t like the look of them on base rims. They look too much like alphabet soup letters to me, and I wanted something a bit more Orky and unique!

This will be finished by scribing his name into the plaque in a scratchy, Orc-like font. Then weathering it a bit with some nicks on the sides and adding some rivets to the corners. That isn’t done yet is this is the second one of these I’ve made, having butchered the first with a terrible attempt at scribing! As such I’m practicing on spare styrene for now, until I’m confident enough to try it again. I’m really tempted to chicken out and just paint the lettering on, but I’m managing to hold that thought at bay :D.

Image

I knocked this up to put into the new Citadel painting handle. I was a bit worried about the extra thinness of my model’s bases against the pressure of its springs. This normal base eliminates that with a nice added benefit of letting me swap miniatures even quicker.

Image

This is a mock-up of the colour scheme I’ve settled on for these guys. As simple as this seems there were a LOT of alternatives. I’m really happy with how well balanced this looks though.

Your eyes are not deceiving you. There IS a picture below with actual paint on some models! It has begun....

The plan of attack here is to use pretty much the same colours given in the Warhammer TV tutorial here. For the bases, I’m not sure yet, but I am tempted to go with the classic dry-brushed ‘goblin green + bleached bone’ grass. I might not even be able to pull that off though, with the texture of the sand being so much less defined from having been sealed.
I’m going to be painting everything in two batches of seven. Quite a big load to me considering how long it is since I last panted anything, but I can foresee 3+ batches taking me far too long! The first batch is: 4 linemen, 1 thrower, 2 blitzer. Which I think this is the best way to ease into these considering that most work will be on the BOBs and Varag.

But for now, Happy Christmas everyone! Enjoy the holidays.

Pretty fascinating watching this all come into play. I like the color scheme too.

I had to buy a new Dremel tool so I can customize some bases for my idea. I also had to buy a new vise, as I broke it during some home maintenance project. It's been so long, I don't even remember what I was doing at the time, obviously the wrong thing! I'm still waiting on the vise to be shipped, but hopefully it will arrive while I have some time off for the holidays. My painting is going super slow, but it's getting to the point where I will need to start working on the bases at some point.

Happy Holidays to you too! Looking forward to seeing these get into the painting stage. Will you be adding goblins and/or troll too?

I have a pair of 3rd ed goblins and a 2nd ed troll. I don't think I'd ever play them, but I'll probably add them to the team at some stage for completeness. The next thing after these though will be a 3rd ed plastic Human team with Griff. They're currently waiting in storage as the next project. The thought of shaping all that styrene again though is a bit unnerving :D.

Whats the Dremel and bases idea? Making stone slabbed surfaces?

Oh, stone slabbed bases might be nice. Hadn't even thought about trying that with the dremel tool.

No, I've been wanting to add some weight to the miniature bases for my plastic minis. Simple enough plan, but I've been pretty particular about it. I'm also not in a huge rush, as I'm still working on painting up the Dwarf team.

Ah, interesting! Looking forward to seeing what you're doing there.

Red and brown added. In the first pic below, the lineman on the left had his red applied straight over the black, as apparently that's how these new base paints are able to work. This took a lot more than the advertised 2 coats though, so I took a more traditional approach and did the rest in brown first, then worked up to the red shown in the second pic. I've left the leg-wraps brown for now as I actually quite like them and may leave it. I'll see how I feel later.

The next step should really be the metal, but I'm eager to try shading that red with some Agrax Earthshade. In the Warhammer TV tutorial, the entire model is covered in it once every base colour has been added. Then each one is touched back up, having been dulled by the shade. I really want to try and avoid adding any more coats to my red though, so I'm going to line the shading in with a detail brush instead. That red is 'Mephiston Red' btw. My terrible camera is just showing it as far more pink than it is!

Happy New Year everyone!

All pre-shade colours added (metal, teeth etc). Resisted my urge to immediately shade the armour, as it's obviously far more efficient to be shading it alongside everything else. Settled on my initial plan of red for the leg-wraps, as it mirrors where I want red for the Bobs and Varag, and the thrower definitely needed a bit more on him.

Nice, they look really clean! I'm always debating about fast and sloppy for the base paints versus slow and meticulous. On the one hand, I should have less cleanup to do if I take my time, but on the other hand I do start to lose interest and patience.

What color brown did you use, I take it that's a Citadel paint? It looks like it's the perfect color for a football, which isn't always easy to match.

Cheers! There's a few tiny crimes, but they'll be covered by shading :D. Anything that isn't getting shaded (such as black) has been left for now as well.
I'm rediscovering that feeling alright! I had nothing left in the tank when I came to putting that red on the last guy, but battled through it just to have the stage complete. Glad I did afterward, but boy was it horrible during!

Mournfang Brown. Yup, using all Citadel colours, as I'm following a Warhammer TV tutorial. It's red instead of brown, but there's quite a nice one here for generic footballs. I just didn't use it myself as it's exactly the same colour as my armour!

Thanks! Yea, I would probably use Vallejo's Leather Brown for the footballs, but it's a bit too light. I did see a GW tutorial on painting balls on youtube, but the ball looked a little too red. Maybe they were using Mournfang and it just caught the light differently. It's funny how particular I can be about some things. It's not like I'm not going to have a ton of balls painted different colors anyways, with all the specialty balls. But I guess I want at least one that looks like a standard American football.

Forgot to mention, that I seem to be liking the Citadel colors (a least in photos) quite a bit. I'm not sure if I'm going to end up switching to their line of paints, but I have been picking up quite a few of them. I did get some Vallejo Extra Opaque paints recently to use for base colors, so we'll have to see what I like better.

They are coming along very nice.
Looking forward to see how they build up from there.
:)

Do you plan on adding side line figures (coach, apo, etc.)?
And if you do are you planning on converting or using any particular model?
