This is one of those areas where fluff gets outvoted by game play. You are absolutely correct. But the rules allow for it.

In the case of Ball & Chain ... they are using the ball to smash the player where they want them to go.

Deathroller ... skilled driving to make sure when they run into you they are angled to knock you down in the direction they wanted.
