Rolling a one

Post by Norse God »

I have been playing blood bowl for years
and tonight I was reading through the rules
and something caught my eye. It says on page
8, a roll of one BEFORE modification is a fail. So how about
after modification? Say you have a six agility
gutter runner? Thoughts?

The modification is in reference to the +1 to dodge or catch an accurate pass for example. That is a modification to the dice roll. An agility 6 player dodges out of a tackle zone into an empty square will always fail on a 1. A roll of a 1 is always a fail and likewise a roll of a 6 is always successful.

If rolling anything other than an unmodified 1 AG 6 players succeds on 1 after modification, except if passing, that becomes a fumble.

:o This really baffles me.
I would have sworn any oath that it read "a roll of one before or after modification" but I checked back to LRB4 and no, it always said "before modification".
That this only counts for the fumble rule when passing is really a surprise for me.

I think in the AG 3 or 4 range, it doesn't really matter but still... WOW! :orc:

Those are the "basic" rules. A split JJ wanted in the rules between starter rules and advanced rules.

Page 22 in the advanced rules:
"If the D6 roll for a pass is 1 or less before or after modification than the thrower has fumbled."

Yeah, I know but somehow, everyone I ever played with handled it like it always was like a passing roll.
Or maybe the problem never occured in any match I played.
You do not meet AG6 players every day... ;)

Say What!?

So a AG6 player can dodge into a tackle-free zone and pick up the ball up in a tackle-free zone on a roll of "1"??

Page 22 only talks about fumbles on 'passing'.

Not a natural 1, no. Page 8 applies.

I want to make sure I understand this correctly.

Are we saying that:

AG6 dodging into 2 tackle zones: Rolls an unmodified 1, fails

AG6 dodging into 2 tackle zones: Rolls a modified 1*, succeeds
*AG6 = target 1+

Roll a 2
+1 for dodge
-2 for 2 TZs
= result of 1

Target is 1+ so succesful?

Its not going to happen often but I have always played that a modified 1 fails also.
With the exception of dodge, pickup, catch and maybe interceptions- I cannot think of any other situation where this would be relevant (ie. pass is always a fumble).

According to the rulebook, you nailed it.
The modified one only fumbles on a pass.
If your example would have been a quick pass instead of a dodge, he would have dropped it.

Let's be honest, you'll probably never had this situation.
For an AG5 player, whos target roll would be 2+, the modified 1 would indeed fail.
This is kind of an exception for AG6 players and I never saw one on the pitch.

Worst thing we ever had was a ST4 goblin... :orc:
