They can be counted as an assist even though they have no tackle zone?

Reason: ''
The end-zone “line of death” does not discriminate when one tempts fate by using a “go for it” to pass over it.

That's a big yes. Makes taking Guard on that Ogre just a little more attractive, doesn't it?

To assist, all you need is to be in the target opponent's tackle zone and no other opponent's tackle zone. There's nothing in the rules about your own tackle zone being needed for that. Of course though, you can't prevent opponents' assists once you lose your tackle zone.

Hell yeah it does...Guard is on the Ogre's list of things to get next. I remember this rule vaguely but now it is coming back to me.

Zombie: be mindful of your wording! You do not have to be in the target opponent's tackle zone! How then, would you ever lend offensive assist when tageting an Ogre who is bone-head?
Assisting a block mentions nothing of tackle zones - it is just required to be standing adjacent to the opposing player involved in the block. (however if you don't have Guard you must not be present in another enemy's tackle zone). LRB p.21.

not in the way Zombie did ;-)
nothing there about tackle zones of assisters nor of the players involved in the block. And I think that's rather important.
Tackle zones are first relevant when talking about other players preventing assists - hence my "however"-sentence in brackets.

Galak be my witness (and he's said this before too), i always readily acknowledge when i agree that i was wrong. Of course, if i don't agree that i was, that's another story.
