Brets - what skills to pick
Hi all,
leaving aside the controversy of whether Brets belong in BB or not, I was hoping to get your advice on what skills to take.
As it happens, I'm playing Brets in a play by email League, and in a few days I'll be skilling several players. The team had a rough start, but is currently in the process of dismantling a Norse underdog opponent.
FYI - the roster used is this:
0-4 110K Blitzers 7338 Block, Catch, Dauntless GP
0-4 70K Yeomen 6338 Wrestle GS
0-16 40K Linemen 6327 Fend G
The roster is currently
1. Blitzer +Tackle
2. Blitzer +skill?
3. Blitzer +ST +skill?
4. Blitzer +skill?
4 Yeomen (3 of them with some SPPs)
5 Linemen - 1 with Sneaky Git (CRP+ version) and skilling into Dirty Player after the game.
2 ReRolls.
So, what should the blitzers be getting?
ST4 guy is currently running the ball. Should he get sure hands? Or let someone else (or no-one) worry about that and get Frenzy, making him good for surfs, but a much less reliable ball carrier?
Should I develop a thrower to better move the ball. Or a dump-off guy - perhaps starting him out with NOS as a reciever?
I'm considering wrestle on the linemen (if they ever skill). With a lot of wrestle, Things do occasionally fall apart, in which case dump-off is very nice to have.
Is a leader worth it? Normally it is not good on a key player, but these Guys have limited options.
What would you take?
Cheers
Martin

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
i have no idea what to give to those expensive blitzers
without A or S access on simple
As you have already a tackle, you could take a frenzy (on the STr4, as you are missing guards), a leader, and ... hum? surehands?

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
Thanks for the input.
More things to consider:
Would developing a dedicated thrower be useful or a waste? If I do, I'm thinking dump off down the line.
Is Leader worth it, or should I just buy the rerolls? It basically gets me a reroll now and a 50k TV discount.
Sure Hands... I just might take Pro instead. More useful on defense.
And I'm also tempted by Fend. It is good in numbers, and the lineren already have it. And it will add mobility to the dodge-less blitzers...
Hmmmm....
Cheers

I`d actually go with nerves of steel, followed by dump off if you want to go for a dedicated ball carrier/passer. Another Knight would have to get NOS and fend afterwards. Would have to move them "as a pair" though to make it work.

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
I wrote something but when i read i just desided to delete it all.
Because the question is, how is this team supposed to win matches. Of course iit will be done, but i don't think there are any obvious strengths or that there are easy to make really good long plan that takes combos with many skills to ashieve it. To compensate for that I would more likely take skills that work good in the short run and then try to get the maximum out of ST/AG-increases on blitzers and yeomen to get stars in the team.
Myself i think 1 leader is to tvefficient to pass up on, 1 sure hand i think is a must. I think NoS work well with Catch for delicate handover, blitz, runaway moves. Pro works well with Dauntless. Tackle is often a good choice. Fend is a decent "i cant think of anything else"- option. When a blitzer have Nos and Pro, DumpOff fits ok. KoS/HMP improves/open up options for your Sure Hands-guy.

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
Hi Adhansa,
early on I think the team has definate advantages. Wrestle to deal with early blodgers. And Dauntless and lots of block/wrestle to fight back against bashers.
But as the team develops I'm not quite sure whether to build up their offense or defense. I think the team has a decent offense (perhaps I'll build a dedicated thrower), so I'll probably try to bolster the defense.
BTW - looks like I'll also be skilling a Yeoman. It's a brutal 5-0 win. But I'm fairly certain I'll just be getting Guard for him (and all the other yeomen eventually).
Cheers

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
For the record, skill rolls got quite interesting:
First blitzer rolled a normal, and a took Leader rather than sure hands.
ST+ blitzer also rolled a normal. I picked frenzy, even though it will make him a tricky ball carrier.
Last blitzer then rolled doubles. Having just compromised my ST+ blitzers ability to run the ball, I settled on Dodge for a new blodging ball carrier.
Yeoman then rolled AG+. I really wanted Guard, but I couldn't pass up AG. I think I will develop him as a ball fetcher (with Strong Arm), allowing me to commit all 4 blitzers to the front line.
Finally, my Sneaky Git also rolled AG+! Having already committed a doubles roll to making him the fouler, I ignored the roll and took DP.
13 points of TV.
Cheers

The blitzer that rolled double should have chosen guard or MB.plasmoid wrote:For the record, skill rolls got quite interesting:

In a team with no AG access a few dodges are just a waste of TV as soon as opponents have a few tackle.
On the Sneaky Git: I would not waste 40k to give AG 3 in a team that already has plenty.
But sneaky git.....is just a horrible waste of TV. Any double on a lineman should be guard.

Re: Brets - what skills to pick
Hi Rolex,
yeah - maybe I would have been better off with just Guard spam. Probably.
SG was my first skill on the team, and as Smeborg said the CRP+ version is pretty good. I wanted to build a solid fouler, because I knew it would be a while before I'd start hitting hard.
As for the blitzer, I'm not quite sure I agree. I do hear the argument a lot, but I generally consider a blodge ball carrier to be a huge asset. Even with tackle around. Also - when I picked it, I thought the yeoman would be getting guard
Cheers
