So many - which?!

Be it FUMBBL, PBeM, the Cyanide Computer Game, VASSAL or whatever - talk about online play here.

This is also the place for discussing the various tools for managing leagues, teams and so on.

So many - which?!

Post by Rev »

Hi all -

Sorry to post such a nooby question but...

I'm a vet BB player, but i've never tried it out online.

I recently managed to play teardowns spacehulk and really enjoyed it and thought i'd give online BB a go.

I'd like something as similar to the board based game as possible - preferably LRB5.

There seems to be so many leagues etc I wondered if I could get some advice.

Do they all use the same client to play? If not which is the best?

Are they email based or do you have to set aside a few hours to play?

I'd love to get involved, but aren't sure where the best place to start is!

thanks in advance

Hi Rev,
basically, there are 2 solutions:

FUMBBL:
Realtime playing. Pretty tool. LRB4

MBBL:
play by email. Ugly tool. LRB5.

Pick your poisen :D

Both sites are down today :P
MBBL site is debugging. Usually takes a day or so.
FUMBBL admin is moving house. Site will be back up on the 16th (AFAIK).

If you want to give MBBL a go, just send me a PM. I'll tell you what to do.
If FUMBBL is more your thing, try PM'ing SillySod.

Cheers
Martin

MBBL2 is pbem. Runs heavily modified LRB4 (AFAIK). With 80 teams to choose from.

While Fumbbl is down check the Downtime chat for help at irc://irc.freenode.net#fumbbl.

Also check out this thread

Edit: Fumbbl/Javabowl games are usually done in between an hour to an hour and a half unless there is overtime.

Most people will prefer to get it done in one sitting. Fumbbl rules expect you to set aside 90 mins.
Some opponents will be prepared to stop the game and continue later but that can be difficult due to time zone issues.

Personally I'd recommend fumbbl because I find it easier and you get games done quicker than the alternatives.

I'd normally be more than happy to help but at the moment I wont be able to do much more than point you in the right direction. Try messaging koadah since he runs a really nice league for introducing new players.
