ok www.java.com has a verification link that you can check to see which version of JRE (Java runtime environment) you currently have installed.

think they're currently on 6.26

You could always download an irc client as well.

I use Hydra and despite being rubbish at setting up that kind of stuff it worked fine for me. I think there is a section in the Help bit of the site that goes through it step by step.
