Really foolish Cyanide question

Hi Folks, I've not bought the pc game as yet and as such was hoping to understand whether the online turn based games worked such that you both have to be online at the same point in time to complete the whole game (so basically BB, but utilising two computers). I was hoping to understand how it worked before working out whether to take the plunge and purchase or not.

There are various multi player modes - so the most common being internet where you are both online at the same time. You can also play hotseat (taking turns at one PC) or LAN based games too.
