t’s a good year to be a Blood Bowl fan. Well, unless you’re one of those folks who can’t abide developer Cyanide. (I think they try to do a lot of interesting, ambitious things, but often end up fluffing them). Not only is a sequel to the relatively faithful and quietly successful 2009 PC adaptation inbound, but there’s now also going to be Blood Bowl: Star Coach, which is to the Warhammer-themed sport of crunching heads what Football Manager is to the sport of foot-to-ball.

Cyanide are at the helm of that one too, and it’s going to be free to play.

So long as they’re not too cynical about it, I think it could be a decent platform for F2P stuff. Buying races, outfits, players and stuff makes a certain sense in terms of the manager roleplaying you’ll be doing. If it’s buying ‘energy’ or advantages I don’t suspect people will be please, though.

Is this going to be a PC version of Blood Bowl Team Manager (which is surprisingly good imo), I wonder?

It's by Cyanide. Expect it to be broken and full of bugs.
If the price is less than a fiver I may give it a go. But any more than that, not a chance.

I hear it's going to be free-to-play, so I may give it a go.

I would imagine this will be free-mium. Most likely a free version that is stripped down to the barest of bare minimums and then a form of micro-transactional additional content - teams, star players, what have you - that would make the game actually 'fun'.

Still I could be wrong but I worked in social-gaming where mtx is all the rage. And that preview just screams it to me.

You're not wrong. Cyanide has desperately been trying to break into the microtransaction market... they tried it with Dungeonbowl, and they've got a F2P (which, at this point, is synonymous with microstransaction-based) Confrontation game in the works.

To be honest, it's probably the best model for Cyanide, because the overall quality of their games has been lagging farther and farther behind the high-end gaming titles, and even some of the higher quality indie titles... and the prices they try to charge for them are not lagging behind nearly as fast as the quality. Niche gaming with microtransactions works well for lower-quality games. Maybe they should be putting their effort into making BloodBowlVille for Facebook....

Have they deliberately copied the name of the board game? It is probably just carelessness but the name is super misleading and it is a little suspicious that they have pinched the name of a successful and recent release.

If I was Fantasy Flight Games then I'd be pissed about the inevitable reputation damage.

Well, to be fair, tossing "manager" on the end of a game, to denote that you don't play the actual game just manage the teams, is hardly high art or creative. There are a long string of <sport> Manager games out there, some from Cyanide, so it's a pretty obvious name to choose regardless. FFG and Cyanide just chose an obvious and boring naming convention.

If I were FFG I wouldn't even notice Cyanide given their relative size and success. Cyanide would shatter against the pink part of FFG's left eye.

Seen it named elsewhere as "Blood Bowl: Star Coach" or some such.

I have read that the first race and any team you make for it is free, then you buy the other races. It would make sense for them to go down this route as mentioned they are falling further and further behind other companies in terms of quality with their traditional video games.

It could work, it could not and I. Fairness to them they do management games well.

I'll be interested based on if it has a single player component, and if the microtransactions are one-time or subscription-based. If I can't play it by myself and just buy all the nonsense at one go, I'm not into it.
