Next you will say you don't properly colour the base rims...

I don't have as much of a problem with square bases as I do diagonal feet. Seems like it could get hard to tell on some figs if they've been stunned or just knocked down.

Round bases are actually more conducive to standing next to each other on the pitch though as they are a little more forgiving.

Numbers is one thing.

Also colour code the bases:

Black = Line
Green = Thrower or equivalent
Red = Blitzer or equivalent
Yellow = Catcher or equivalent

White for odd positions like (zombies if skeletons have black)
Orange or Blue for Assassins and Black Orcs.

It's a nice visual code that lets the opponent know what is what.

I have tended to use the 2nd edition colour coding which I remember as (I might be wrong)
Red Blitzer
Grey Lineman
Green blocker
Yellow catcher
White thrower

Then I throw in black for runners (say Ghouls) and blue for specials if they don't fit in one of the above (so my goblin bomber is white, my trollslayers red etc).

Personally I have no difficulty identifying figures on my own teams without using colored rims. e.g:
It's easy to distinguish a Skink from a Saurus
Even with a human team the 3rd ed humans & Orcs are easily distinguished as throwers, blitzers etc.

If your using figures which are not distinctive, I'd advise choosing different figures...

lucasluckydelux wrote:I would definitely not warn someone about "diving tackle". My players have numbers on their bases and my opponent has my roster and he can also ask before dodging. I think the surprise is what makes it more useful. Otherwise having this ability loses most of its interest and if I must warn my opponent I would take another one. Same applies to lots of other defensive abilities: sidestep, stand firm, tackle, prehensive tail etc.
Instead of keeping the skills secret another way to get good use of them would be to learn how to position your players so your opponent can't avoid triggering them..

On the other hand, I usually play with 4 minute turns. I guess if you have all day and no clock you can waste three minutes each turn answering "was it this or that guy with diving tackle".

For abilities which automatically affect opponents actions {Tackle, Diving Tackle, Disturbing Presence, Tentacles etc}
I probably would mark the base. If only to avoid an opponent dodging away because I forgot to use the ability :(

And "Disturbing Presence" needs to be clear since it affects opponents within 3 square.

Would be nice if tournament rules required such marking & listed the abilities it's relevant to.
