Returning player + Newbie

Post by pauljamesog »

After a gap of over 10 years, I'm back with BB with my very enthusiastic son (age 10)!
He is using Orcs from the box (though we probably need a few extra figs - suggestions on development?) and I am using my old and bold 2nd Ed Skaven figs while I piant up the Humans from the boxed set.

See pics of our first game very enjoyable here - he was thrilled when he scored a TD fair and square

Can somebody pls confirm that LR5 is the current set of 'official' rules we should be using?

thanks!
Paul

Welcome! Second edition Skaven are so sweet!

LRB6 is the latest version, also known as Competition Rules Pack or CRP. http://bit.ly/oC7umn

Standard orc build has 4 black orcs and 4 blitzers, so you'll want to supplement the box (plus a troll, mostly). If you ask nicely on here someone might be able to sort you out with some more plastics.

PS whereabouts are you? Have a league you can join? I'd imagine seeing your son beat someone else would be better than him beating you

Thanks for all the well wishes and thanks for that link - the rules have moved on over the years! Still very recognisable as the old game, but seems a lot smoother with less exceptions. I like how the big guys are just 1 space players now too.

The Lad and I just finished our second 'tutorial' game - both so far have resulted in 2 all draws, which has also kept the peace ;D Having tried a few variations and introduced things like interceptions, next game will be a proper one. We have also done some team dveelopment too, so he hads two new skills and a big ugly Troll to play with now too. A few extra blitzers would go a long way too though

We are in Melbourne, Australia, and a bit remote at the moment, but that will change next year.
And yes, watching him beat another player would be wonderful to see!

Well the fun continues, including Lad's Troll throwing a goblin over my front line and scrambling for a TD - good times!'
He has done it twice now in fact. Not sure we are playing it correctly, but it sure is funny.

In the meantime I have also unearthed some of my old figs. I used to have pretty much all the old 2nd Ed figs bar elves and dwarf teams, but this is all thats left. The Lad thinks they are awesome though!

It had to happen one day...he beat me fair and square (well as fair as a good game of BB gets anyway!)

I got my 10-year old kid into BB in 2009. Back then we had 3 teams: Human, Orc and 2nd ed Elves. The kid's 12 nowadays and we're running a 10 team league between just the two of us. The kid's painting his first team (Black Scorpion Humans) and our league's currently running season 2.

Hope you and your son will have as much fun with BB as we're having. Our next game will be Halflings Vs. Skaven and I'm playing 'Flings so I'm expecting to lose that one.

I've got 3 daughters too. The oldest who's 16 couldn't be less interested in BB. She said something about it being too geeky, but I was too busy watching my ogre stomping an elf catcher to be listening to her. My younger daughters, 5 and 8, are already asking me when they can start painting and the 8-year old has tried playing a couple of times.

Her attention span is still too short for BB. She looses interest during the opponent's turn 'cause she's not doing anything. She still hasn't seen the importance of watching your opponent. I'll play with her whenever she likes so I'm sure she'll get into it someday.

The 5-year old's already decided that she's going to play orcs when she grows up.

Make her roll armour for own players ("saving roll") and shout "Tackle!" to request the AG roll when you move out of a tackle zone.

I hardly ever dodge. I found these very cool dice in a game box 20 odd years ago and have hung on to them since. Don't know why I keep playing BB with them since they're clearly Nuffle-cursed. The dice will only roll double 6s on armour rolls (who cares about double 6s on armour rolls?) and will only roll 1s on dodge rolls. The great thing about the dice is nobody else will go near'em. It's the one thing I can't get anybody else to touch, even when I dare them for money. People will rather just pay up than touch my dice.

I could start dodging against my 8-year old, but then she'd probably think I'm letting her win and loose interest anyway.
