I saw a lot of different kind of tournaments, reflecting often the structure real sports (american football, football (or soccer, don't want to start a polemic... :)) and so on).
So, which is your favourited (or most used) schema for a league?

My leagues use a variant of Swiss style with team rating having an impact on the Swiss standings ... personally this is my favorite.

For me i would prefer to see something like

8 Groups of 4,5 or 6 teams. each player each other once in a league basis with the top team advancing to the quarter final stages. From there it is a straight KO. Alternatively if you haven't got that may players 4 Groups with each group winner going into a semi-final.

Or some variation of that.

In the ECBBL we've got 9 coaches, so just play a single league - coaches play each other twice and top 4 go into play offs with the league winner choosing his semi final opponent.

We had decided that if there were 10 or more coaches we'd split into 2 conferences, coaches playing the other conference once and their own conference twice with the top 2 from each conference going into to play offs.

I have been toying with starting a 16 team league that would run as follows:

2 Conferences (A,N)
4 Divisions (2 Divisions in each Conference)

Your team would play each team in your Division twice (6 games). The 4 division leaders and 4 Wildcard teams (2 from each Conference) would enter playoffs.

Following the NFL you would end up with 2 conference leaders that would play for the championship.

Cons: You only play teams in your division. Ideally you would play 10 games so that you play everyone in your conference... but then again you don't play against everyone in other leagues either.

that's why

I posted this question because I am writing some software for the League management in all its anspects from the creation till the stats. :)

It will be written in Java, that's an excellent language, but requiring a longer design/developing time, so I will have the time to collect your opinions.

You might want to check out LeagueManager (link below) for ideas.

Thanks.
Really a nice site (I used also PostNuke to realise two portals and I found your very neat... :))
Questions:
Can some one (me, for example...) still join one league or are they still closed?
Last update?

Ok, that would probably be the FUMBBL site you ran across.. :)

There is currently an open division which is open to anyone at any time. Check out the "Joining" link on the page for more information on how to join.

Very bluntly, after the first turn, you only play against someone who has your same number of wins/losses. Can't be more precise.
Comments, anyone?
