Are we allowed to take a wiz, never even played a game with one on either side. Eg will I have to read up on these rules?

You are allowed a wizard, yes. There are several varieties to choose from.

If you take one, it'd be nice if you knew how your chosen wizard worked before you arrive. In addition, please bring a copy of the relevant rules book so your opponent doesn't have to take your word for it.

As far as your opponents taking one goes, you can either choose Ignorance is Bliss or Know Your Enemy as your preferred counter tactic
