SpeedBowl '13: Harder, Better, Faster, and Stronger. Discuss

Post by lunchmoney »

So the majority of tournies are over 2 days and are either 5 or 6 games.

There are some which are only 1 day. And these are mostly 3 games.

All this is very fitting, as 3 is a good amount to play in a day. And I enjoy it immensely.

But what about a SpeedBowl tm event?
1 day, 5 games.
an example schedual:
match 1; 1000 to 1115
match 2; 1130 to 1245
match 3; 1330 to 1445
match 4; 1500 to 1515
match 5; 1530 to 1645

One hour 15 minutes games. Promotes a faster thinking game.
Now anyone who's played against me will know that 75 minutes to finish a game is slow poke for me :) But would you attend a tourny where you have to play faster?

TOs! You do not need multiple copies of rosters. It's a waste of paper.

I could and would, but I'd be surprised if there was enough people who would attend to make it a reality. I know excellent players who fall to pieces if they are forced into playing quickly, and tourneys seem to be for most people about kicking back and socialising as well as the gaming.

You’d probably need to introduce some sort of chess clock system, say 30 mins playing time each. Otherwise a player who was ahead would have an incentive to play at normal pace as running out of time would mean they’d still win.

You’d probably want to limit the number of skills available and make very sure all teams had players that were easily distinguishable.

15 mins between rounds seems pretty low as well unless it was a small tourney. It does sound fun as a 1 off, I rather enjoyed playing speed freaks on FUMBBL where you had 1 min turns.

We kicked of one of our seasons with speedbowl (2 minute turns). It was great fun and I for one would play at such a tourney.

I do think you might need to make the breaks half an hour as this will fry the brains of those not used to fast turns.

You can do this without it being as difficult if you use the Street Bowl rules.

Chess clocks would be the key I'd imagine.

Surely playing a speed Blood Bowl tourney using Street Bowl rules is missing the point of a speed Blood Bowl tourney?

The short breaks were just part of the example timetable. Of course people would need longer breaks.

The clock idea is good. As you say, it would be very easy for one player to run the clock down for a win.

Overall I would not think this sort of event would attract much more than a dozen players. But I think that even then it would be fun :)

Whilst I have the Street Bowl rules on my hard drive, at home, I've never read them.

I like the idea. The thought of shuffling the pack of the established order is good. I.e good players who fall apart when rushed would mean the rest of us stand a chance!!

1 day tourneys always float my boat. Would it get NAF ranked, or too wacky?

Not really that wacky. Just fast........ I've not floated the idea past anyone in the NAF yet. But I will ask Lycos this weekend, see what his take on it would be.

Don't get me wrong, wacky is good! Chess clocks are quite pricey - would need to ask a local club very nicely to borrow theirs.

Ditto.

If not Street Bowl, then BB7's is a alternative (and I believe they've been ranked in the past, though don't quote me on that).
