Requesting advice on a potential Digital Camera purchase.

Post by MistWraith »

Not sure if this is the right place for this, but here goes.

Anyone have any experiance with the HP Photosmart 433 3.1 MP camera?

Sam's Club has them for under 150$ US, and I need a camera to take photos of my models.

Here are some of the listed features:
3.1 Megapixel
3x Digital zoom
1.5-inch Color LCD
Fixed focus, auto exposure, auto flash including red eye reduction
Automatic and manual controls
16 MB internal memory, with Secure Digital (SD) memory card slot
Video capture with audio (audio playback on TV or PC only)
hp instant share™
Docking Capability (Dock Insert Included)
On-camera Battery Charging
Direct print to hp Photosmart Printers and select hp all-in-ones
Exif 2.2 support!

Here is the manufactures specifacations.

Thanks alot for any advice.

I've just been looking for a camera too - when I get to work I'll post again with what I've found.

edit: just looked at the specs for that one though and it isn't suitable - it says nothing about a macro mode, essential for photographing minis, and the closest you can get to something is 85cm... not really ideal.

digital zoom is poo, its not a proper zoom and you will get better results putting it onto a pc and using a proper graphics package for resizing

optical zoom is what you want and if you want to tke pics of minis then you want a good macro mode (close range focus) which is more important than the zoom

personally I recommend canon cameras though nikon iirc are meant to be very good at macro modes

I would also get one that takes compact flash cards rather than the companys own brand proprioty cards (like sony memory sticks) as you will get better prices if you want a larger capacity card

at the end of the day though go somewhere that will give you 14 day money back guarentee then you can try the camera out and if its a bit lame then take it back

also no matter how many megapix the camera is its only as good as the lens and canon make the best lenses which is why i went canon

This camera is crap at taking mini photos. No macro mode and 85 cm minimum focus area should make you reconsider.

Thanks a lot. I guess this one is not the one for me.

On the WPS boards they are recomending the Cannon A60. Any one know much about it?

If you only want it for your miniatures - you might consider a scanner instead (note not all scanners can be used - they need some depth of field).

Only good for individual figures, but a lot cheaper than a camera
(all the pics on my site were done with a scanner)
