best Dragon mini??

Post by Norse »

I'm thinking about picking up a Dragon mini, but there are thousands of them out there... :-?

I love the Heresy one, but the size and the delay to get them cast, forget it.. sorry Andy!

I was wondering if you guys could point me to your fav riderless dragon mini. I want something pretty feral, not domesticated.

price is less important to me than scale.. I want something I can paint in under 40 hours without being a familiar..

so far the nicest I have seen is by Ultraforge I think, though I'd need to remove the howdah, but I'm open to suggestion.. :)

Reaper has some dragons is different sizes.
If you can't find any, you can always look at D&D mini dragons. don't care for the material they are made of, but they are good size and detailed.....

thanks for the links, the Pathfinder was on my list too..

McFarlane Dragons look awesome, but probably too much "toy" and not enough "miniature" for my liking (although these days that's a matter of semantics I think.. )

I got one of these, imho the best dragon miniature due to its ferocity. I try to enchance my painting skills a bit before tackling this one... :-?

Edit: do you remember this one: the Confrontation Cynwall dragon.. that raises the question if it's actually a dragon or a wyvern..

If you want something huge and fantastic, I'd recommend Viszeralyn the oracle dragon (currently available from Valiant miniatures and through Coolmini).

If you would like something a little less costly, and maybe a little less two feet tall, I'd recommend some of Reaper's upcomming Bones dragons. Especially Neathermaul (a gargantuan sized Dracolich).

Another option I've found is good is to go to a random gift shop and look over the dragon statues there. I've found a couple that turned out rather nice. That's where I got this guy:

They can be much larger and cost less than other dragons. They tend to have more sculpting/casting flaws than minis, and you'll need to watch out for rubbery parts and glitter (which will add texture to your repaint). Otherwise, they're a great option.

That would have been my suggestion, or the Magma Dragon http://www.forgeworld.co.uk/Warhammer/W ... RAGON.html

I would recommand any forge world dragons if you like details.

@odinsgrandson : It feels something wrong with your dragon's head (eyes or proportion, I can't tell)

I have a hard time imagining that the proportions are off, given that the dragon's head is so far from being anything like human, and draconic proportions vary so widely from one dragon to another.

The thing about that picture that make me feel like it might be a little off is the photoshopped background. It feels stark to me, and I personally prefer the gradient or black cloth backgrounds that we normally use (this guy was too big for the gradient we had at the time, and we hadn't started using the cloth yet).

Here are two other angles on him:

On a side note- Ultraforge has a fantastic dragon, and Dark Sword is currently doing a kickstarter for their massive dragon.

But I honestly think the best thing to do is wait until some of Reaper's Bones dragons are available. It can't be long now, right?
