What if... the scoring team receive?

Post by MKL »

Warning: I'm not trying to write the LRB7. I'm thinking about an alternative tournament, like Dungeonbowl or such. Please, no flamethrower :)

The rules punish the scoring team by letting the opponent receive. Stalling become a necessary tactic for the attacker, and the defender... well, he's not so much interested in defending against an early score. It's that no-defense attitude that irks me.

What if, after a touchdown, the scoring team receive?
The rule for Restarting the match, CRP page 15/11, become something like:
When play is restarted after a touchdown, the scoring team is always the one that receive the kick off. At the start of the second half, the kicking team is the one that did not kick off at the start of the first half.

I got a few questions:

1) What do you think are the consequences? The first things I can think are:
-Slow teams are in deep trouble against agile ones*: hard to come up against a 2-3 td lead.
-Defensive td is even more a game winner, especially in the first half. Score from defense, and keep receiving.

2) If such rule is implemented, what else need to be changed to keep some balance?
-I'm thinking about the rules for setting up. Maybe the attacker setup first? :-?

*Please, ignore the Wood Elves for the purpose of such discussion. The WE are an issue in regular BB, too

I think elfy sides ought to be up 4-0 on "their" half.
I also think I'd want a one-turn-scorer.

It would be a big big boost for the speed teams, to make it fair you would have to have the offence set up first.

We've done offence set up first to balance sudden death overtime, it works decently. I would also change 'perfect defence' to a second chance for 'blitz'

An extra problem:

I receive (Turn 1/Turn 0), score (Turn 2/Turn 1, receive (Turn 3/Turn 1)?

The team doing the kicking would have far fewer turns.

I understand the game experience you are wanting to eliminate but I do think it will be significantly imbalancing towards the speed/agility teams. They are just far more likely to put in multiple TDs during their half. While the power teams are awarded a 2nd opportunity to score, Elven and rat teams will often pull it off 3 times or more.

In any event there would be a question of whether you are implementing extra turns or eliminating turns? The defender that yields a TD is supposed to get a turn next, so either the turn marker doesn't advance on a TD or the defender is denied a turn altogether. One will significantly lengthen the game, the other will further punish the power teams by significantly reducing the number of times they can throw a block during the game.

Don't really think it's a viable idea as it pretty much allows fast teams to just keep scoring with little to no threat to them. Any elf team, Skaven, Slann, Amazon or even humans would have a field day.

It seriously limits play style and back and forth play imho as well.

Yeah, that is the biggest snag.

If I change the “Restarting the Match” rule, I need to change the whole setup/first turn phase.

Hypothesis: the scorer get to receive, but the kicker get a sort of “Blitz” turn before the receiver can act (ie: Move and Blitz actions, not Block actions. And the ball is still in the air).

Again: I'm not trying to change the normal BB. I'm looking for a different beast.
I know leapers will wreak havoc in such a context, I'm just trying to understand if a different mechanic is feasible.

Just make the receiving team set up first.

This is enough to thwart 1ttd, but the kicking team is still going to play fewer turns than the receiving one :-?

I think we gonna try the “blitz turn for the kicking team” option in the upcoming game of the “Valhalla Team”.

Receiving team (ones that scored last) setup first.
Kicking team setup, kick ball..and...get next turn.

well that's my take on the alternative...2nd half kick/receive swap as normal.

Pretty hardcore, but simple. I'm intrigued :)

Simple solution that would work pretty well.. I'd tack on a little adjustment to that, where kicking team needs to kick into the back-half of the recieving teams endzone (otherwise every team with kick will end up with a player under the ball when it drops every time).
