Chaos Dwarfs in a TV 110 Tournament

Post by Xod »

Hi,

I'm going to play Chaos Dwarfs at the Dutch Open (5 games, 1 chosen skill after each game) and I was wondering what skills to take.

My setup is the following:

1 Mino
2 BC
6 CD
3 Hobgoblins
2 RR
and the rest in FF

I'm planning to use BC's as ball carriers, so after game one I would take Sure Hands on a BC.
After game two, Break Tackle on the other BC (I don't know if you can stack skills, in this case I would put block or breack tackle on the SH BC)
After game three, juggernaught on the mino
After game four, guard on a CD or dirty player on a hobgoblin

Any suggestions? (maybe I'll take guard on a CD before juggernaut on the mino)

Greetings,
Xod

From the outside looking in, I'd say take Break Tackle on both Bulls.

After that, Juggernaut on the mino is an option but I'd want some Guard on the CDs.

I wouldn't take Dirty Player. Not in a LRB5 tournie with this rule set.

Last tournament I took Chaos Dwarf I went:

Game 1 Minotaur - Guard
Game 2 B C - Break Tackle
Game 3 B C - Juggernaut
Game 4 C D - Guard
Game 5 C D - Guard
Game 6 Hobgoblin - Sure Hands

I did alright Winning 3 Drawing 2 before imploding to a big loss in the last game.

Looking back I would miss the Minotaur off and move the skills up one, perhaps giving another C D guard later.

Funny, but I don't remember having any problems with ball handling. In this tournament, or the other two I used Chaos Dwarf. But in those I took an extra TRR and hobgoblins instead of the Mino!

I took CD to the BrassBowl, and in hindsight:

- BC really need break tackle. Without it they are just very expensive Black Orcs. Take Sure Hands on one, Break Tackle on the second, and if you can stack, give both to one.

- it's a classic, but you really need those guard-dwarves. Against strength-teams as orcs - necro - undead - ... with regular ST4 acces, you'll need guarders if you want to use your BC as ballcarriers.

- don't waste a skill on DP; since you have only 11 players to start with, I wouldn't take the risk. CD have other ways to clear the field of enemies (guard, remember  )

- juggernaught on the mino is fine, but I would take a guard-dwarf first.

Oh; and keep your mino close to your beardies... no enemy will walk around a lying mino without kicking him at least once...

Yours,
EH

Dont know if you've already played, but try

Game One Break Tackle Centaur
Game Two Guard Dwarf
Game Three Guard Dwarf
Game Four Guard Dwarf / Block Centaur

I wouldnt bother with Sure Hands for the Hobs, by the time you'll get it, the Tournament is pretty much over anyways. The Minotaur is fairly tooled up anyhow from go, so I wouldnt waste a skill on him, and the Dwarves simply become about 200% better when they have guard, as I'm sure you're aware. A couple of those will make your cage or front line very unbreakable.

But at least one Centaur really needs Break Tackle. Otherwise, they're just too easy to take out of the game by marking. I wouldnt use them as primary ball carriers though - yes, obviously, put one four plus squares in as a potential hand-off candidate at all times to keep your opponant guessing, but ball-handling is so much easier with the goblins - especially when you dont have to worry about distribution of SPP either. Of course, if you get a touchback, thats a different matter entirely..

its more a case of being able to move a cage along

you can tie up players using dwarfs (preferably the ones without guard, though they usually manage to get themselves the wrong side of the pitch ;])

the mino is great at making space blitzing with frenzy, obviously vs lizards you want to get after the skinks with block and tackle

vs orcs you will usually out guard them, which will make it a pain for them and they are fairly slow as well, so you can hold them up to stop them scoring

lizzies are a pain to play against, I'll admit that, though if you can tie up the saurus, they will have to break with the skinks allowing you to pick on them

4 rerolls and 2 subs is rather handy

2 rerolls and picking the ball up with an AG2 centaur strikes me as silly, give him sure hands and he has no block and also can't dodge very well

Also 130k to sit in a cage, where st4 is more useful outside the cage. Loads of coaches do it and I've written a lot of posts on this over the years on here ;]

I think Grum that its more about your skill as a coach that makes that lineup work, than it being better than one with bulls.

I'd be looking to hit the four Hobgobs as much as possible (which is easier since you've got more on the pitch). As with most bash teams if you lose the numbers then it can quickly go pear shaped, and even with a decent bench you've still got a lot of squishy players to be hit.

I'd also think strip balling war dancers would cause problems too. Even 2 dice against you've a ~70% chance of getting the ball off one of those hob gobs. You probably only need to do that once to get at least a tie.

perhaps, but norse won a tournament with a no bulls line up didn't he ;]

*poke* *poke*

yer strip balling wardancers are a pain

but that is the same for any team playing against them, when that happens the wardancer is then usually sat in the middle of a world of pain

4 block, tackle dwarfs and then a hob nearby to do a kill (foul) action if need be

in tournaments I've only ever lost once to wood elves, that was with humans and they had a st4 wardancer who kept getting lucky against my st4 blitzer carrying the ball

having said that, they are the team I dread playing against the most
