Best double choice for Wood Elves?

Post by mubo »

I think there are four real options:
1. Leader Treeman. Gives the 3rd Reroll on your most durable piece. Also allows you to have all four catchers, as you don't need the P access of the thrower.
2. Guard Catcher. Dead handy, also allows the old WD leaping frenzy 1D/2D into a cage.
3. Mighty blow Wardancer. Popular with those crazy Europeans, increases chances of winning attrition battle, which with WEs= win. Not a fan of this personally as WDs have some great options anyway with frenzy, strip ball and tackle.
4. Jump up Treeman. A little bit fruity, but I think this could be ace, and will probably try it at Poobowl next week. What could be better to tie up all those dwarfs while the rest of your team runs off with the ball? But is it as good as the other three?

I find an MB Wardancer to be immense value in a progression team. He brings something new to the side, and as you say, that extra KO or CAS per game can really help the cause, especially when you specialise him around the double. The Euros love the Kicker too, which I sort of put in the same bracket; excellent value over time, questionable over six games now Bad Kick is long gone. I just think in the sort of environment we often find at tournaments (5-7 games, the odd double), MB is a bit of a gamble (as is kicking short with Kick, playing for Blitz!) when you're trying to focus on what Woodies do well with few skills, rerolls and chances per game. Your old faithful Guard Catcher then, I think, provides good solid value over the course of a weekend aiding the effort other players are making, where an MB WD might pop up and be huge once or twice.

I've never been a big fan of spending skills on Trees unless they can pick something movementy up dirt cheap. I think at Poo at 115, you're not needing to Leader him with 4 skills on day one, it's not expensive or annoying to Leader up the Thrower (plus, in the Elf-off, Pass is nice, and I personally like the extra ST3 guy over the fourth Catcher. Three does me). I think it's a great set for Woodies by the way, hope I'll avoid you! :D

Not very busy this section of the forum...

Inclined to agree, I think the guard catcher probably offers most in terms of 16 turns of being potentially useful. The MB I like, I think it about doubles the chance of a KO/cas over all AV values. If you can hit with him every turn you can cause some attrition. With skaven or other elves I'd hate this. However means losing one of strip/frenzy. JU tree though could cause some problems, although if he roots/is avoided then it seems a big waste.

It's a good ruleset for lots of teams though, skaven get 12 + apo, 3RR, with 2 guard, Blocking RO and strip on day 1. That's about as good as it gets for them. Undead get 14 men, 3RRs with a block mummy. Not played you for a while, might be due one.

Guard catcher for me.
MB is too unreliable. Could be great could do nothing all game.
Treeman doesn't need any skills to do the job he does: stand there and split up the pitch.
At TV 110 I don't think leader is really necesary. You have plenty of dodge and enough Block to get by with 2 rerolls.

The mobile guard really makes a difference though.
For Skaven teams it's different. There I take the double to Block up the Ogre.

edit: crazy europeans? ???? You do realize you're european as well do you? :)

if you are playing a league, leader is useless, in my opinion, if you are in a tournament, i prefer to give the double to the w.d. and take leader with the trower

guard to a catcher... i really see dead catcher walking :D

Jump up Treeman, funny, but i think that m.b. is utilized every turn and hope that a jumping up treeman isn't :)

They are all good in their own way, and depending on cost I wouldn't be unhappy with any of them. Guard Catcher is the favourite of the serial WE coaches though it seems.

At 1.1 million I like this one the best. Not played them at other tv's.

I’ve used them all to some extent in tournament style games (not the Jump-up tree, but a +MV tree, which is the same if not better) and my favourite is the guard catcher. Unbelievably handy; and you know what your getting for 16 turns, whereas the others are situational and leader you can get easily anyway. Although if you like the four catcher roster taking leader on the treeman is also very good and this also frees up a normal skill for someone else.

I guess it also to some extend is dependent of the tournament rules.

e.g. I had a tournament with 105 TV players and 15TV to spend on skills before first game (at most 1 double)
So that is 6 normal skills + one double!
I admit I had much fun giving the tree block:
More Cas + less knockdowns of my tree

I am also no fan of MB on wardancer, since he has better things to do with frenzy, strip ball (or sometimes tackle)

So from the list, I would prefer leader on treeman, though I have not taken it so far.
That sounds most reasonable.

Another alternative is just guard on a plain lineman.
Simply to spread the target range for my opponent.
Catchers are already a good target to aim for even without guard :)

I like guard on a wardancer. One can jump into cage and the other can follow and get a two dice blitz for a low end tournament since other teams are not likely to have much guard you can use it to your advantage.

In that setting, leader on the tree is nice cause woodelves need the rerolls, but I also wouldn't take a tree in a low tournament.I would rather have the extra coin for another reroll.

longterm i like mighty blow on one wardancer. It is good to have one punisher to beat on the other elf teams, and then make the other wardancer the strip ball king.

Woodleves with one guard makes it so much easier to crack a hole against a bruiser team.
