Eurobowl X - Update feed

Post by pelle »

Hi all,

This weekend we have the biggest BloodBowl party of the year. 264 coaches will travel, or have already started their travel, to Belgium from all over Europe to participate in the tenth edition of Eurobowl. There will be an invasion of coaches from Norway to Italy, from Portugal to Hungary. And they all have one of two goals: the Eurobowl or the Eur'Open.

In the Eurobowl, we have 17 nations and a pirate team competing for the big prize, honour and glory. Of these 17 nations, 16 have had the joy already to participate. So they already what to expect from Eurobowl. But we also have a virgin among us, a new nation ready to showcase its capacities and capabilities to the European BloodBowl community: Norway! The Viking invasion from Northern Europe continues. I wish them the best of luck on their maiden Eurobowl. Regulars, please be gentle with this fair maiden from the north ;)

In the Eur'Open, we have a massive 120 coaches! 40 teams of 3 players will compete for the Eur'Open trophy. In the past, this tournament could have been perceived as the ugly stepsister you need to lock away in the attic. But she grew up to be a bombshell, and is demanding her place on the dancerfloor. And she is here to stay! Hence the massive interest (OK, maybe the Belgian beer has something to do with it as well :) ).

This weekend will be crazy, it will be in the top-3 of BloodBowl tournaments with the highest attendance (the other two being World Cup I and II). 264 like-minded coaches are gathering this weekend in Ostend, the Queen of the Belgian sea-side resorts. 264 coaches battling it out on the field for honour and glory, but they are also there for socialising, drinking and most importantly: having a blast!
Ostend, brace yourselves. Because this is going to be one hell of a party!

Those of you who cannot make it to this great event, do not despair. We will provide you with regular updates both here, on Facebook and Twitter. During the weekend, there will also be a live feed on YouTube. I could say that it would almost be like
you were there yourself, but you will have to get the beer yourself ;)

Cheers,

Tom

Friday, 20:30 - Getting close to kick-off
Half an hour till kickoff, half an hour till the opening ceremony of the biggest BloodBowl party of the year.
Most of the BloodBowl crowd has arrived in Ostend, dinner has been served and the first beers are passed around. Hopefully the hotel staff has enough beer in their cellars…

In about 30 minutes we will have the official opening of Eurobowl X. Of course there is the default stuff, like welcoming everybody, explaining the basic structure of the weekend and so on.
The part I am already looking forward to, is the live draw. During the opening ceremony, the first round of the Eurobowl will be drawn live on stage. This means the trash talking can already start this evening. Who will be facing the defending champions, England? And which country will be the first opponent of our mainden, Norway? I’ll keep you informed!

Preview round one.
When we take a closer look at the draw for round one, there are some interesting match-ups. No doubt that the one that will draw most attention is England – Scotland. I don’t think you will be surprised when I say there was a lot of roaring in the hall when this match came out in the draw.
Goliath will be taking on David on their road to another Eurobowl victory, or will they? My guess is that the Scots will be at the tables tomorrow with knives between their teeth and their kilts raised (I’ll try to provide pictures if this happens ;) ).
I checked with the English and the Scottish team captains (Purplegoo and Don Shula) how they feel about the clash of Britannia.
Purplegoo explained he was delighted with the draw and Don Shula was not too unhappy himself. “Why would we fear to play our friends from the North?” said the English teamcaptain. “Not too long ago, a vast majority of the Scots voted to stay in the UK. This means they all love us”. Don Shula made a remakrt that that means that about 5 of his team members would like to be English, but that there also were real Scottish men in the team. And they fight dearly.
When I asked them about their expectations for this match, they both replied: “Nudity!” So that is something to look forward to (or not).
When I asked Purplegoo for his tournament expectations, he said “I hope we manage to finish the tournament.” That might be an underlying note that he is not really confident after all that the English will come out of the clash unscathed. And maybe he is correct, because Valen is wondering whether there ever was a 9-0 defeat in the history of the Eurobowl.
The defending champion has been warned…

Round one has started, 132 games are underway.
At this time, we have nothing but questions:
* Who will win the top match of round one? Germnay or Denmark?
* Will the Scots upset the English?
* What will newcomer Norway do against Spain?
* Will the French be able to live up to their ambitions?

I have already asked this question to Galmor, the French team captain.
"We came to Belgium with high hopes, so we have to win our first game against the Welshmen. We need to keep the pressure on the Italians and the English if we want to perform better than last year." said le capitain. "I will not be a happy captain if we do not end up on the podium. That us the reason why I am keeping a close eye on my players. If they do not perform well, they will be substituted, and maybe even shot..."

Team Star Buck's Coffee
I just had a quick chat with Azzroag, one of the team members of "Star Buck's Coffee". Azzroag is the defending Eur'Open champion, and he hopes to repeat this again this year. Apparently he held auditions to decide on who could join him in his quest for victory.
The first round went well, with two wins and one game in a draw at the moment of writing.
When I asked Azzroag for his ambitions this weekend he replied the following.
"I hope we will finish on the podium, but there is a lot of competition. In this tournament, there are a lot of really good coaches, so it will be hard. We will try our hardest and see where we end up."

Round one.
The first round of Eurobowl X is in the books, and we have a tie at the top. The hosts from Belgium had a great start against Finland, beating them 6,5 – 1,5. The French team had the same result against Wales. Sitzerland took a big win against Hungary, Spain beat rookie Norway and Protugal sunk the Pirate ship. Alle games ended in 6-2. England managed to grab the win against Scotland (5,5 – 3,5) and Italy did the same against the Dutch team. The honour of the Vikings was held high by Sweden and Denmark. They both won 5-3 (against Austria and Germany). The Danish victory came as a surprise. After the first three games had ended, Germany took a 3-0 lead, but the Danes turned it all around.
So far, there are no draws between the countries in the Eurobowl. It seems to be everybody is playing all or nothing.
In the Eur’Open there are currently three teams with the maximum amount of points. All these teams are French (Star Buck’s Coffee, MLF1 and Les Azes). It seems the French are really on fire. We’ll see if the can keep it up in round 2.

Saturday
Team Norway.
In the tenth edition of Eurobowl, we have one rookie nation attending: Norway. This great bunch of guys came all the way from Northern Europe, to fall to the Spanish team. Maybe it was too hot? I asked captain Zulu501 what happened.
“We came , we saw and we lost.” explained the captain. “We were beaten by a very experienced and strong side. Most of our team members have little to no experience in the tournament scene. In Norway, the BloodBowl community is mostly an online community. There are not a lot of tabletop leagues, and we do not have a tabletop tourney. But we are thinking about organizing one.”
When I asked whether it was difficult to organize a team for the Eurobowl, I heard that that was no problem at all. “About six months in advance, we had a complete team, and we still had some players that volunteered to freeboot if necessary. 5 of our guys are from Bergen, one from Trondheim, I (Zulu501) am from Aalesund and we have one guy who lives in Wales.”
When I asked how they liked the tournament so far, Zulu501 said: “We are very happy to be here. The standard of play is very high and we hope to learn a lot in this tournament. I have been too a previous Eurobowl as captain of the Scottish team and coming to Eurobowl is very addictive. Once you attend one, you’ll want to come back”.
I guess the Norwegians have come to stay. Heja Norge!
