SETTING THE SCENE

There are only three matches remaining in the finals for Three Wolf Moon.

First, they challenge the League of Orcish Gentlemen in an elimination final.
Second, if successful, they will face the Forest Kings in the first semi-final.
Finally, if they win that game, they will fight in the ultimate contest - the Grand Final of the CCKUP.

These games are all-or-nothing. They must win. Every game. The winner stays in the contest, the loser goes home to lick their wounds and dream of future glory.

THE QUARTER FINAL

Their rivals in this game are the League of Orcish Gentlemen, coached by Coach Origin. This bruising veteran team from the Cathedral Conference went undefeated in the regular season. A solitary tie was the only blemish on an otherwise perfect record. They are at the peak of every Cathedral Conference leaderboard - Most Touchdowns For, Fewest Touchdowns Against, Best Casualty Differential, Toughest Team. Only the Dwarven Gollywogs edged them out for Total Casualties - by one. Their fans packed the stadium.

Against them, a ragtag team of rookie Norse valkyries that didn't even make the top four in their own Duke's Division, and are only in the playoffs through a forfeit.

The noise of the crowd is defeaning.

Offensive captain Karn Mithralia limps into the Three Wolf Moon locker room, favoring his injured knee. Only Smörhund seems relaxed about the importance of this game, the rest of the team is fidgeting nervously with their gear, performing their normal pre-game rituals with an underlying current of fear.

Smörhund's calm irritates him, but he lets it go. The snow troll no longer seems like a liability but he is far from the potent weapon Karn had hoped he would develop into.

Ine of the valkyries hurriedly turns away from Karn's gaze. Karn catches a glint of glass, and hears the sound of a small glass tube being crushed.

He looks away. Desperate times call for desperate measures.

Coach GuppyShark comes in shortly before kickoff and says a few words. They are simple - there will be no second chances. Fail here and the quest fails.

It's all the motivation they need. The team moves resolutely onto the pitch, where the League of Orcish Gentlemen have won the toss and elected to receive...

FIRST HALF

There is a fierce blizzard on the pitch as play begins (it is nearly winter in the City of Churches). Coach GuppyShark declares this a good omen.

Hlaðguðr Swan-White boots the ball deep into the Orcish territory and play begins. The berserkers and rookie Geirahöð War-Spear try to hold back the orcish tide at the line of scrimmage but the experienced black orc blockers knock them down quickly. Sigrún the Victor, Svipul the Flexible and Þögn the Silent flank wide and threaten the lone backfield Thrower, Kneel Strongarm.

Some Orc blitzers fall back from the line to deal with the Norse pass rushers while others break through the Norse line. The Orcs hold the Norse at bay long enough for Kneel Strongarm to scramble out of the pocket and find the open player downfield. He rushes downfield. A beserker tries to break free from the Orc blockers to put a stop to him, but she stumbles in the mud and the Orc runs in a touchdown at the end of the first quarter.

With a full quarter remaining Three Wolf Moon receive the Orc's kickoff. It falls near Geirdriful Spear-Flinger and she scoops it up, the blizzard having subsided.

Three Wolf Moon attack the Orc's symmetrical defence by flooding the right hand side. A vicious melee breaks out and Geirdriful finds herself open but for two orcs - one in front of her, one behind. Coach GuppyShark signals to the team's wizard and the one in front of her gets slammed into the pitch by a lightning strike. Karn Mithralia headbutted the other and Geirdriful scored a last-minute rushing touchdown!

SECOND HALF

In the second half the score is tied with Three Wolf Moon set to receive the ball.

The Orcs set up similiar and once again Three Wolf Moon set up to attack the right. Unfortunately for them the Orc defence was a clever ploy and the Orcs quickly showed that they had been concealing a perfect defence. The Orcs suddenly had a very strong right flank.

Three Wolf Moon played a conservative plan of attack. Geirdriful Spear-Flinger stayed in the backfield with the two Ulfwereners protecting her while the line took shots at the Orcs, trying to find a weakness. The team's focus shifted to the now-weak left side and began pushing hard. The Orc Troll leaped on Smörhund, who slashed with his claws. The two went down, but the Orc Troll did not stand again.

The orc team scrambled to the left to fill this hole and once they had done so, Three Wolf Moon reversed the play again and stormed up the right flank! With a hand-off to the side-stepping Svipul the Flexible Three Wolf Moon took the lead 2-1.

With only a few minutes remaining in the half Three Wolf Moon set up to defend against the League's answering possession. Concerned about the possibility of a thrown goblin, Three Wolf Moon kept the fastest players deep in the backfield and set about delaying the Orcish advance.

In the final moments, two Orc blitzers penetrated into scoring range. Smörhund flattened one and three players crowded the other.

Orcish Gentlemen coach Origin has a decision to make. Risk the handoff to a goblin then goblin throw to force overtime, or get the blitzer free and throw all the way to the endzone.

Declaring "Never put the game in the hands of the troll!" he orders Kneel Strongarm to make the play!

The Orc blitzer stiffarms the Valkyrie in front of him and dodges away from Karn's reach. He runs into the touchdown zone and turns, awaiting the football.

Kneel Strongarm has been running downfield and he throws. The pass is long but on-target. The blitzer reaches up for the ball...

... but it passes through his hands.

The whistle blows, the game is over.

Three Wolf Moon progress to the Semi-Finals.

SEMI FINAL

And so the final day of competition dawned. From all across the City of Churches the teams descended on the East Adelaide Coliseum for the day of the Grand Final.

The crowd's appetite would be whet by the two Semi-Finals and then the ultimate Grand Final contest would begin to the delight of the fans, all paid for by the generous King (please don't rebel!).

First game was Three Wolf Moon vs the wood elven Forest Kings.

The Forest Kings were a veteran team with some of the most famous players in the league, however they had suffered several telling casualties in the season - losing their Treeman, their star catcher and a player who excelled at guarding his friends. They were the sole remaining team from the Cathedral Conference.

Three Wolf Moon won the coin-toss and coach GuppyShark elected to receive, wanting to dictate the initiative.

The ball was secured by Sigrún the Victor, whose Sure Hands would ensure the elves couldn't Strip the Ball away from her.

The team then marched carefully down the field. The Wardancers took shots at the cage but paid a heavy price - they did not stop moving forward simply because there were prone elves in front of them!

One Wardancer was injured and badly hurt, another was knocked out by a vicious stomping from Geirdriful Spear-Flinger, who was spotted by the ref. Coach GuppyShark threw a bag of gold at the ref but he derisively kicked it into the crowd and the Norse Thrower was sent off.

As the clock ticked away Three Wolf Moon scored, looking good with a 1-0 lead going into the second half.

It was all downhill from there.

The Forest Kings received. Their thrower was in the backfield to receive, several catchers flooded the Three Wolf Moon backfield. One was blitzed down, the others were marked up. The thrower ran forward, bombed it to the receiver, who caught it, dodged out and through tackle zones and scored the two-turn touchdown.

Annoyed but not undetermined, Three Wolf Moon set up to kick once more. And the kick-off result... BLITZ.

The now-recovered Wardancer ran under the ball, caught it, evaded the Three Wolf Moon players trying to stop him, then dodged out through tackle zones for a touchdown.

Annoyed but not undetermined, Three Wolf Moon set up to kick once more. And the kick-off result... BLITZ.

The Wardancer ran under the ball, caught it, but was knocked down.

A scramble for the ball developed. Three Wolf Moon fought hard and began driving downfield with the ball safely secured. Along the way, Þögn the Silent was silenced permanently. In the last turn, they scored, tieing the game and leading into sudden death overtime.

Coach GuppyShark called for a drink.

The thrower ran forward, bombed it to the receiver, who caught it, dodged out and through tackle zones and scored the two-turn touchdown.

Three Wolf Moon's quest ended. A complete inability to prevent the elven aerial attack ruined an otherwise flawless game, but ended an impressive season.

I had a blast and I can't wait for next season. Three whole months without Blood Bowl!? Damn the off-season!

Will Three Wolf Moon return? Probably not, but either way, you'll read about it here. ANd seriously, how do you stop elves :?:

Thankyou, and good night.

BLOOD BOWL OUTSIDERS

With the fifth season of the CCKUP less than a month away, the pressure is on for front office staff around the league to make sure they have their personnel in place ready for the regular season.

First to strike were the Bromeliad Crusade and Cryxian Warmachines, who signed their coaches Ross and Vain immediately. Many teams have not been able to secure their old coaches and look like they will miss the season.

There is a fierce bidding war between Three Wolf Moon and the Dirty Birds. Both teams previously coached by GuppyShark (Rookie Coach of the Year). Three Wolf Moon with more experience want to make another playoff tilt and the Dirty Birds, the Undead team, want to make the leap from playing in the Hindley Street Bowl to competing for the CCKUP cup.

It remains to be seen who will win the services of coach GuppyShark and how much it will cost, but it'll almost certainly be too much.
