Front page updated with new photos.

You'll note I've written the player names on the front of the bases for the two Werewolves. They have such distinct personalities for me that I always refer to them by name when I play - this helps my opponent keep track of what I'm talking about!

Ominous shadow in Lord Makk's portrait kindly provided by my cat.

Norse on Norse action, as Odin intended.

To a sell out crowd the embattled Hordes of the Frozen North played Three Wolf Moon in an arranged match - the real contest had been a drinking bout the night before, and Smörhund had been the last man standing! Perhaps this explains why most of the Hordes' better players had to miss the game completely...

Three Wolf Moon won the coin toss and elected to kick. They booted the ball and the insightful coaching of the recently hired defensive co-ordinator Kärleksfulla Kramar (yes, I did it again), along with the sheer power of the Three Wolf Moon werewolf/snow troll combo, enabled them to take down the ball carrier and secure it. A long, drawn out struggle developed as Three Wolf Moon strove to push the ball deep up the right flank against increasing numbers of opposition players. The Hordes' induced chainsaw kept Smörhund out of the fight completely.

As the final seconds ticked away nobody had scored, although plenty of players had been dragged unconcious from the field. In half time the head referee had the chainsaw escorted from the premises, the promise of gold from the Hordes' owner the "Tough Pie Guy" failed to sway the unusually honest umpire!

In the second half the Three Wolf Moon squad showed what a prepared team could do. Their snow trolls and werewolves on the line, with the chainsaw removed, smashed a gaping hole in the Hordes defence and team thrower Geirdriful Spear-Flinger took the ball upfield surrounded by valkyries, scoring a touchdown halfway through the second half.

The Hordes players gathered themselves and set themselves up for the drive that could potentially prevent the loss. They stacked the line and kept their positionals behind the line. They set up a strong cage on the right flank but the ball carrier fumbled the pickup and was unable to enter it, the ball falling to the pitch by his feet.

The opportunity was not wasted and Three Wolf Moon batted him away from it before running it upfield. Desperate blitz attempts from the outnumbered Hordes Norsemen were unable to prevent Geirdriful Spear-Flinger from scoring her second touchdown of the match, resulting in a 2-0 victory for the valkyries!

I got a few skill ups.

I gave one lineman who already has Sure Hands Kick Off Return and the Thrower rolled doubles so I gave her Strong Arm.

Brad, if you have a look at the league tracker there is a number after everyone's name. That is the round that that person's data is current to. So the one currently hosted has your team as at the end of Round 6 for example. (Round 7 started yesterday)

And yes, I do wish Chris would update it more frequently. But that is what I get for delegating responsibility and using helpers. :P

Oh and love the blog. :D

Reality Check for Valkyrie Fans

"Three Wolf Moon's chances of a playoff berth are slim to none this season," states Blood Bowl expert Gammalt Skämt.

"We've had our staff here at Blood Bowl Outsiders poring over every play of every game televised in the CCKUP and the results are conclusive. The Duke's Division teams that will make the playoffs this year are the Royal Hearts, Swiftwind Strikers, and Dragonspine Stompers, with the Dark Lords and Three Wolf Moon vying for the last seed."

Asked to elaborate, the commentator was only too happy to explain. "The Royal Heart's air attack has been completely unstoppable all season. That berth is a no brainer. We have our best astrologists calculating the results of each match left in the schedule, and derived their final regular season points tallies:

Top 6 Teams (Predicted Score)
Royal Hearts (33)
Swiftwind Strikers (27)
Dragonspine Stompers (21)
Dark Lords (20)
Three Wolf Moon (20)
Cryxian Warmachines (16)

If the results are true, then the Dark Lords will secure the last spot by touchdowns scored."

When asked how confident he was about these predictions, he said "Absolutely, 100%, without qualification, except that this is Blood Bowl, and anything can happen in Blood Bowl..."

Coach GuppyShark of Three Wolf Moon has discounted this analysis. "Anyone can quote numbers to win an argument, 86% of people know that! We're going to make the post-season, we're going to win the grand final, and we're going to take that cup back to Norsca."

An important but expensive game.

I played a (literal) home game against the Dragonspine Stompers, the leading bash team in the division, who were kind enough to visit me for our game during the Easter break. With the differential between the teams I was able to recruit a legendary player, werewolf Whilhelm Chaney. His breakneck speed proved decisive against the slow-moving Dwarven opposition, leading to two touchdowns, although it would have been three for him had he not failed a GFI on the goalline. Another player was there to scoop the ball, thankfully.

The Dragonspine Stompers scored once in the initial half off a pass-play (They have a +AG +MV throwing piece that I call "The Elf") but were otherwise held back by my four 4+ STR pieces.

While I may have won the touchdown race, I definately lost the casualty one. Karn Mithralia, my Block werewolf lost a point of Movement and the apothecary was unable to prevent it. I also lost a two-skilled lineman but her skill selection was 'early-league' sort and I didn't mind losing her. One of my other linemen suffered a -1 Agility.

My next game is against the division-leading elf team that I expect to lose convincingly, since as previously discussed I struggle against fast teams.

"Pile the timbers higher."

The valkyries and werefolk of the Three Wolf Moon tribe assembled on the shoreline, gathered around a small longboat that was being loaded with wood.

In the centre of the wood, laid out with her sword and shield beside her, was the valkyrie Brynhildr Bright-Battle, pale as ash and still.

Karn Mithralia limped to the forefront, a flaming torch held aloft. His injury suffered against the Dragonspine Stompers, the team that had taken Brynhildr's life, was still bleeding. The team apothecary said he was not likely to make the next game, and he may never recover the same speed he had previously enjoyed.

"Brynhildr died as she lived, mercilessly and without hesitation. She goes now back to Valhalla, where the elves she has slain will wait on her with mead and honey."

He dropped the torch into the boat and kicked the boat's prow, sending it out to sea.

As it drifted away the flames consumed it until all that remained was the still water and burning debris.

The valkyries watched, stoically, then cheered and returned to camp.

And so the Royal Hearts continue their undefeated season. Three Wolf Moon kept the Royal Hearts to a season-low 2 Touchdowns but were unable to respond in kind, being shut out by the astonishingly agile Pro Elf team.

This was definately not some rookie coach with a knack for rolling 2s. The CCKUP Cup boldly proclaims the name of this man. It was a hard fought game and I was priveledged to learn from the encounter.

Karn looks forward to his return from injury and I have two skills yet to select for my linemen.

Victory turns to ash in the final seconds.

A vicious battle. Fur and heart raged against mechnical contraptions. The steampunk necromantic Cryxian Warmachines fought the Three Wolf Moon tribe to a standstill. In the closing seconds of the game, their clawed fast-mover snatches the ball and scores the tying touchdown.

Three Wolf Moon is no longer a serious contender for the playoffs.

Karn's return to the pitch was as dramatic as anticipated, he managed to catch a pass dropped by a valkyrie and (slowly) run it in for a touchdown. He is now expected to move from a linebacker role to the offensive line, and has been developing the skills he will need to Guard his companions appropriately.

Þögn the Silent continued to display her ruthlessness and killed a Cryxian ghoul outright.

Lord Makk, Kara the Storm, Geirdriful Spear-Flinger and Ráðgríðr Council-Truce are out for next week.

Thus ends the regular season, and with it Three Wolf Moon football.

Final record - 5 wins, 3 ties, 3 losses.
Scored one more TD than gave up.
Suffered one fatality and inflicted six.

I'm a little disappointed to not make the playoffs in my rookie season but I am fairly confident I know why I didn't, and I can avoid making the same mistakes again. I will be putting the team aside for now. I feel like I rely far too much on superior speed and I will be playing a slow team to force myself to learn how to handle faster opponents, because the elves and dwarves-with-move-boosts just ran circles around me.

Well as the Valkyries should have taught you, it isn't over until its over and they start to sing.

The 4th placed team in the Dukes' Division has pulled out of the Finals race, promoting Three Wolf Moon to 4th earning a knockout final against Romero's Basterds (a rookie Necromantic team)!

The quest for the CCKUP Cup continues!

PLAYOFF TIME

Three Wolf Moon vs Romero's Bastards (Necromantic)

The downtrodden Three Wolf Moon had thought they were eliminated from contention and had packed their bags for the long flight home.

Then the shock announcement came - it was decided that actually the Elven teams had not paid their bribes in full and Three Wolf Moon were suddenly back in it!

It would not be an easy run, however. Through an arcane playoff structure based on a kicking sport the 3WM coaches don't quite understand, the lowest-ranked teams would face elimination games while the higher placed teams competed for bye rounds.

Representing the bottom of the Duke's Division, Three Wolf Moon were called upon to challenge Romero's Bastards, a Necromantic team from the Cathedral Conference, in an elimination final.

Coach Kimito of the Bastards won the coin toss and elected to kick.

Surveying the opposition players, coach GuppyShark was surprised to see only one Necromantic Werewolf on the opposing roster. Apparently their second werewolf had been recently slain and the Bastards could not afford to hire a new one.

The ball went deep and Three Wolf Moon thrower Geirdriful Spear-Flinger recovered it and moved forward. The Three Wolf Moon line with Smörhund and Karn demolished their zombie opposition and the ball was moved to the weakened right.

The Necromantic team held in and kept pressure on the 3WM cage. Blocks were thrown and two valkyries were sent off with injuries. The Necro werewolf went down and a valkyrie promptly stuck a boot in, but it had no effect.

The Zombie tide increased however and nimble play from a Wight and a Zombie put the ball in trouble. Geirdriful checked it down to a Runner despite being tackled by several opposing players, in what is easily her most impressive play of the season, and only her third completion.

The Runner then scrambled, evaded a blitz and scored halfway through the first half!

A riot erupted in the stands and the clock was wound back. The pressure was on - giving the Necromantic team plenty of time to equalise.

The valkyries held firm and a last minute dodge-dodge-dodge-etc play from their werewolf was unable to deliver.

The half ended with Three Wolf Moon up by one score. The Bastards received the kickoff at the start of the second half.

While their flesh golems made a good show of bashing forward the line the nimble valkyries were able to slip through the gaps and Þögn the Silent took down the ball-carring Ghoul. The ball popped loose with no Necromantic players in a position to stop the touchdown! The ball was run in, but not before kicker Hlaðguðr Swan-White was ejected for fouling the werewolf, although the werewolf was not injured.

This decisive play meant the Bastards would need a miracle to scrape a victory out of the second half. Unfortunately it quickly became apparent that the Norse gods themselves (including Nuffle) were watching closely. The Bastards had used all three of their re-rolls in the first three turns, and then their ghoul failed to pick up the kicked ball.

This resulted in Three Wolf Moon once again abusing their speed and, with coach GuppyShark wondering what enchantment had invigorated his players and staring in awe, a valkyrie scooped the ball up right in front of the flat-footed Ghoul!

This ball was run in for a third touchdown! The Bastards could only moan in disbelief. In the closing moments of the match, Three Wolf Moon scored another defensive touchdown.

The final result - 4-0 shutout, the best score the team (and coach) had ever posted.

Both coaches were astonished by the result. Three Wolf Moon had been playing with a divine fire that could not be quenched. Every key action was a success. Smörhund succeeded in every Wild Animal test. The difficult first-half throw was a successful completion.

Three Wolf Moon is still in the playoff chase. The cup could still be within reach!
