For the beaten up pitch I have a suggestion on the execution.
1.) glue sand to the base
2.) completely wash it with a black wash (I use GW Badhab Black mostly)
3.) drybrush it bone (I use Vallejo Game Color mostly)
4.) glue little patches of static gras "fall" to the base (I use regular GW static gras for it, but it`s identical to most other static gras around)
5.) paint the side of the base black
Nothing fancy, but looks good and is done quick `n easy.

corroded metal (like industrial diamond plating or sheets of metal). If voted for I would be able to supply a how to guide.
