Out of curiosity, why is this the case? Why can't matches be recorded as NAF member v. Unknown?
Is this a technical reason to do with the database or a philosophical one to do with maintaining quality of data?

Both I think.. naf rankings shift based on the ranking of your opponent, so the naf would need to agree what ranking an 'unknown' would count as, which would make the current debate here look like a love-fest.
