why did the NAF decide to restrict the trophies to bigger tournaments?
As you dont want to hijack a thread about reasons to join the NAF why dont you start a new thread?

Apologies - busy time! Didn't understand about it being a new rule, so had to go and check and the TFF inbox is not a great "to-do list"!

What did you understand the rule to be?

no problem;

it seems we're not understanding each other right :-).

I'm not asking for the rule: I understand the rule.

I'm asking to why it was implemented. A year ago (a year and a half?) EVERY tournament winner received a trophy. Now a tournament has to have 12player (4rounds) or 24 players (3 rounds). So a lot of small tournaments won't be able to give out a trophy anymore, which is a shame. For example: I'm in Belgium, I can think of maybe 4 tournaments (Belgian Open, Brassbowl, turncoat and Brussels Bowl, maybe one more) that will be able to give a trophy out.

so again, the question is: why can't smaller tournaments no longer give a trophy to the winner?

I think it's simply that the original rule had been misunderstood (or miscommunicated).

When I was first told about NAF trophies (which was only about 3 years ago, honestly; the NAF shield hasn't traditionally been a huge part of American Blood Bowl culture), it was that you needed to have 12 participants and 4 rounds in order to qualify. Most of the tournaments in my region are only 3 rounds, so this was somewhat disheartening. I didn't think it was worth challenging just to suit my local scene, though.

In 2014 Glowworm brought the issue to me, as Crumb Bowl was usually quite large and he felt the participants deserved a NAF trophy. So the committee and I decided that tournaments with fewer than 4 rounds would require 24 participants in order to qualify. When this change was reported, it was discovered that some organizers (and staffers) were unaware of the original rule. I suspect that this led to some people believing that both halves of the requirement were minted in 2014.

Yep, the "12 players, 4 round" rule has been around for years.

Over here (Belgium and Holland) we were all a bit surprised by the news, so I guess -as you said- nobody was aware of the existence of the rule.

Maybe something for the NAF to reconsider?

We're looking at an overhaul and possible expansion of the whole trophy system, so a change to the requirements is quite possible.

Erm...this might be a stupid questin: does NAF produce trophies to send around? Surely the Tournament Organizer takes care of this? And buys whatever price the budget allows?

I don't get it.

There is a NAF trophy:

And under certain circumstances, you can get one (or more?) for your tournament to give away as prize.

The one in the picture was given away at a german tournament, the B7, in 2012.
I think the painting and decoration has to be done by you.

Nope, painting can be done by anyone! The limit was (I believe) to retain a certain amount of credibility for winning one - in theory it would be quite easy to "luck" your way to a tournament win if the tournament is a combination of short and small, if you get a lucky draw for example.

Some good examples here: http://www.thenaf.net/2013/06/naf-trophy-gallery/

What I meant was, the NAF provides the trophy unpainted.
So "You have to take care of the trophy being painted and decorated yourself." is better to understand?
