Also a post about your podcast. I listened to the other #1 BB podcast first ;) and straight into Both Down. I'm not sure yet which podcast I like more, but I enjoyed listening to Both Down. I'm looking forward to that monstrous 50th episode.

Some comments:
-Lovely 80's jingle
-You could probably count (pun!) Vampires as an undead team (more than Nurgle I'd say!).
-I liked the talk about 2nd edition teams, I only started playing BB from lrb4 on but I like the history lessons.
-I find Wilhelm Chaney a great star player!
-J Earlice... a vampire werewolf....
-Ramtut's Wrestle combined with Break Tackle is great. He gave me lots of troubles when playing against him.

"OK, that's it! I'm going to make a fuming rant on TFF as soon as I sit down behind my desk! Bunch of numbskulls!"

^ My thoughts 15 minutes ago in my car while listening to the fluff- and team name bashing on Episode 52. :pissed:

Sooooooo... what went wrong? Let's start with what went right: Me listening to your podcast. I love listening to it and there's plenty of good stuff in it I could elaborate on but I won't because this is a rant. I'll write you a love letter some other time. So why a rant? Well, it comes down to abuse of power and American Cultural Imperialism. Yeah, that's right! Ok, maybe slightly exaggerating there  but I was genuinely annoyed at you two talking about how you would or would not accept certain team names into your league. To be clear: I love fluff, I respect if you have a league where you have strict requirements on what goes and what doesn't. I like the idea of you guys tackling fluff and team names BUT, I'd like a more objective stance. Now, objectivity is of course impossible but only using your own league rules as a reference to what's good and what's not seems weak to me. Surely you two can come up with a better way (=more objective, more reasons other than your own league's rules/requirements) to look at team names.

Using the Blood Bowl world for fluff isn't easy for people who haven't gone through all the Blood Bowl editions and/or magazines. For instance: all I know is that it's a alike to the Warhammer world. Now I can go to a Warhammer wiki and find stuff (which I do occasionally, to come up with teams like Quetza Sackers or Pavona Belladonnas) but actual Blood Bowl fluff is hard to find. That's one thing. Another thing is that Scott makes a weak point by insisting on geographical references in team names. It's weak for two reasons. First of all, Steve, the Great Kilowoggy, already mentions it during the podcast: there are PLENTY teams with names that don't have a geographical component. Then why whine about it? I, for instance, really like team names that don't have a geographical component (and to be clear, I love geography!). Second of all using geographical references is more a thing of our world (and with how you say team names should be, even more so of your American world of sports) than of fantasy worlds. Because maybe you've chosen to have your Blood Bowl league in the Blood Bowl world, maybe others don't care so much about that specific (incarnation of the) Blood Bowl world. Maybe they are alright with something less rigid, a more free form, more parallel to our world etc.

So, I'll make a suggestion: keep doing this! But slightly tone down on the fluff elitism :orc: and broaden your perspective on what is a good team name in your opinion and what not.

"Yes Steve, I like Bubonic Brats too, although personally I dislike Brats as a mascotte and it wouldn't meet the requirements for my own league"

I like Nurgle's Numbskulls. What's more wacky, Blood Bowl-esque than a lousy mascotte in your team name? Eagles? Boring! Destroyers? Lame, what are you? 12? Numbskulls is fine in itself and great because it alliterates with Nurgle. There you go. Time to get to work.

edit: oh forgot the abuse of power part: big name Blood Bowl podcast, lots of listeners. Your words carry some weight. No pun. Stop making me feel bad for not using names you'd like.

Disclaimer: non-native, might contain some weird grammar/spelling and maybe some other cultural weirdness.

Hey Baduk

i love the post and as you can guess, I pretty much agree with you.
The main thing I'd say is that I guess we didn't do our job of explaining our views. This was not meant to be a Both Down Rules Of Creating Team Names segment, this was purely Scott's views of team names.
Scott has a very specific view of the game. He runs our league and he is very peculiar in what he likes. That's why i tried to point out that there are official fluff teams that Scott wouldn't accept into the league. This isn't too say that Scott is more important than the fluff, he's just the Commissioner of our league and in that aspect, he has authority to shape the Role Playing aspect as he wishes.
We love people putting fluff into teams and any fluff is better than no fluff.
I'll give you some info on my history; I've got no experience in Warhammer and only have ever played Blood Bowl. I realize that not everyone goes out and reads to fluff or even wants to, but that shouldn't keep people from doing fluff of some sort. If they want to of course.
There will always be people that just will never care and that's fine too. We don't try to say this is the only way, we just try to be goofy and funny and show how weird Scott is about it hehe

Thanks for listening and thanks for the post.
Hopefully that helps some.
Steve

That was somewhat clear but throughout the segment that became less and less obvious. Perhaps make a 3 stage rating:

Stage 1 (Steve's-uber-1337-Realm-Of-The-One-And-True-Blood-Bowl-Lore):
Reikland Cleavers (approved)
Reikland Beavers (approved?)
Reikland Sneezers (denied)

Stage 2 (generally fluff-ish, somewhat weak puns allowed):
Reikland Sneezers (approved)

Stage 3 (absolute lower end of the spectrum, no respectable commissioner should lower himself to this level really but if you have no other choice):
The Wet Beavers (uh...)

on my way back home I continued listening and haven't stopped smiling yet. This morning I was listening to you boasting about your sponsors. Great stuff 8)

I don't know Scott, never met him he lives on the other side of the world, but from what I've heard on both down I think you'll find he likes wet beavers who doesn't?
