Banners in signatures

Post by Ithilkir »

Just checking (can't find it in the FAQ) but are banners allowed in signatures? Obviously not huge ones (I tend to stick with 468x60 on other forums). But want to make sure before I step on toes if I do :)

Its probably best not to at the moment, bearing in mind the server is running via a broadband connection. I've noticed a performance drop in the past few days and any more graphics added to posts would drop it even more.

Hang tight and we'll see how things go.

Yes ive noticed it getting a bit slow loading pages and things. From what i know about databases and stuff when they start getting larger and more and more ppl start to acces them its usually hard drive performance as well. Still, I am sure we can cope for now a few second loading time never hurt anyone.

One (amongst many others) good thing of TalkBB, IMO, compared to some other forums I've seen is that the text area does not usually include images apart from smileys (apart from certain threads whose main idea is to show images). Banners in signatures would certainly make the browsing experience a lot worse - they take space, bandwidth and add nothing interesting to the discussion itself. IMO the 'www'-button below each post should be sufficient.

YMMV, but I'd prefer the banners being banned.

Amen. And one can always market his/her site under 'Website Chat'.

I'll lose the banner idea if you lose the "10 types of people..." sig ;) That's been done to death for yeeeeeeeeeears now. And your sig has five lines of text that adds nothing releveant to the topic as well! ;)

Nah, just kidding, wasn't wanting to offend so that's why I checked first, I'll not bother with a signature banner :)

Naturally, if JohnnyP considers banners to be ok, who am I to say anything about them. I dislike them, that's all.

And as you surely do know the difference between 101 lines of text and a 111010100x11110 (5 lines and 468x60 for the illiterate) image, so I won't go into that.

I'd rather not see them. A lot of us are still on 56k dial ups.
A simple link like a few of us employ should be good enough if you're not satisfied with the www. icon.

I'm reluctant to allow too much graphics to appear all over TBB. I was pondering a banner exchange where members could have their sites advertised at the top right of the board, but have never gotten round to implementing it. To be honest, I don't have time at the moment due to so many website/home projects.

It wasn't an advertising banner (guess that got lost in my description) but a banner sized graphic of a name or team etc. Still no difference in whether it's allowed or not of course :)
