Working with off numbers at tournament's.

Post by Grimthorn »

I want to grab people's ideas on what to do with a tournament when you have an odd number of people turn up.
My tournament is this weekend and at the moment we have an odd number of participants.
Thoughts please people, in case it stays that way?

As a TO I always put myself (or a helper) down as a Spare player, so if an odd number turns up, I play, and if an even number turns up, then I don't.
I think most TOs do this.

Yup - either that or find a buddy who's happy to stand in as spare player for you.

Yep.
Every BB event I go does this, every event I run does this.

However, I've been to other game system events and they've run a bye system - I think this is BS, especially at one day events that may only have 3 or 4 games and they dont offer a 25-33% refund for being forced to miss a game you have paid to play!

TOs! You do not need multiple copies of rosters. It's a waste of paper.

Totally agree - it was one of the things that put me off attending "official" Star Wars tournaments.
And even if I was offered a refund, I'd be put out - if you advertise a 3/4 game event I expect 3/4 games, not 2/3 games.

I always thought murdering the last person to arrive if you had odd numbers would serve the duel role of improving timekeeping and getting even numbers, but as I don't want to spend time hiding a body, sorry I mean going to prison - I just do as Darkson and Lunchmoney do - I'm 'player' 0 and if we have odd I play, if it's even numbers without me then I get to laugh at others failing GFI's.

At Gert this year I was both! I got to stand in for a missing player on one day, and sit back as a full blown TO day two. I don't know which I preferred, but I think it was being able to kick back as it were...!

That often happens when someone can only play one day. I played on Sunday at Exiles when we had dropout due to illness.

My full respect to the tournament organisers who sit out when there are odd numbers at their tourney. They put in all the effort for everyone else for a weekend and don't even get to play. Honestly have to admit I probably couldn't do that myself!

Have been at a (non-NAF) tourney where 1 guy played 2 matches each round, but it really didn't work as you really do need to play attention during each game.

I've done that, at the request of another TO, when they knew a coach was running late.
We checked with his opponent whether he'd be OK with me playing him at the same time as playing my own match. The other option was a free win but no game. He accepted and promptly beat me 4-1. I won my own match 3-2 :)
It was a fun challenge but I don't think I'd do it again.

I did that at a club night once. Won both games but never again!

I've often played 1day of my tournament and sat out the other (hence a lot of 3games on my NAF record), and even played games 4&6 and missed game 5 as Geggster popped by and I let him play (was the first NAF tournament to allow the 3 "new" races, so Geggster took Slann for one game and was #2 in the world with them  ).
