Certain figures are useful....

Post by Mojoshenpo »

.... no, I've yet to buy a cheerleader.... :P

A fig for the ref to represent the IGMEOY....

A fig for the head coach to represent being able to argue the call....

A fig for the apothecary (I move him to the dead box when he is used)

Well.. I Love my Orc and Goblin Cheerleaders for my Orc Team.
And I do have a Painboy for My Apoth.
And for my Norse I use Reaper Models of "Dancing Girls" and on of the "Townsfolk" sets to have Cheerleaders with lots of Beers.
I'm still Looking for the Clasic Brunhilda Singing Fat Woman.

Many of the teams don't have Official Cheerleader models.
So you pretty much have to make them yourself.

But I do Like having the Chearleaders and even a Stand of Fans.
My Giant with the Penant and huge bag of popcorn is a Spectator Favorite.

So do what is fun for You and helps make the game more fun.

Where does it end?

Post by Thefurmonger »

Thank you sixpack for such a well writen post. I'm glad someone around here actualy READS the rule book. If we start ignoring every rule we don't take the time to obey than we will be nothing more than filthy lazy cheaters. When we start saying "I think that's just for tournements" than what's next? I mean if we don't need figs for apoth's then why do I need one for my Blitzer?. You know I think You only need "Minitures" or "Dice" in tournaments. For fun play you can just push bottle caps around on a table and yell TOUCHDOWN!!! from time to time.

Just my 2 Cents

Probably because it doesnt matter in any way shape or form from the rules, where your apoth is, as opposed to the Blitzer. Secondly i for one use mini's for said things, i just dont make sure they are painted or fit any scheme. Taking a weapon off a skaven for a Gutter runner is one thing, but since halberds arent illegal for a head coach to have, i sure as heck aint cutting one off just to make a bunch of dweebs that get their mini's painted up and converted by the company for free happy. When gw at least makes official ass coach, apoth, and cheerleader mini's for bb, then come back to me and complain because im using Skaven Warlord with 3 swords as my Assistant Coach Squeeeeee of Blitzing.

We have entire teams in our games fielded by paper :) Yes I believe that rule is so they make more money... cant blame them.

We tend to use a small plastic baby elephant as a IGMEOY ref mini. There was also the infamous badger in a dressing gown used as a Treeman. Our league have a huge range of minis, not all painted. We rule that as long as both players know what the figs represent then anything goes, though by now we have accumulated almost every team in one way or another.

There's a big difference between house ruling and cheating. Since by far most of the non-GW-store-based leagues in the world house rule that this is ok, then it's not cheating in those leagues, it's playing by their rules.

I certainly try to have painted minis for everything...but I don't expect my opponent to have all his stuff painted, nor do they have to be GW. I do expect some sort of miniature, tho. I don't go for people using pennies and so on. I definitely would be against the guy who uses a foam block for his steam tank, if you don't own a steam tank then don't field one.

I have some cheerleader figs, and I have em painted, but I DEFINITELY don't expect that of anyone, especially because the cheerleader figs were always pretty hard to come by. In fact I hardly ever put cheerleaders on my roster, but I just like painting so I have the figs. Plus in a pinch they can be an extra line elf (the box set only comes with 8 and I start my teams with 10)

Yeah, I would always use minis for my team, just because I think it's important to look cool, but I ounce had an opponent who used lego guys with numbers painted on their backs, and different outfits for different positions, No skin off my back, I thought it was kind of clever

I prefer to face painted figs, but if not, no big deal. I will not waste my time with someone using bottlecaps, pieces of paper, or legos...no matter how inventive their owner is. I understand if you just started, forgot a fig, or added to your team. I am painting up my additional staff so I am in compliance, but ordinarily I don't care if someone else ignores that rule.

I disagree with the whole "just to sell more figs argument". Why do they need to be painted then? I'm sure it figures in, but it also makes the game more enjoyable to all involved. I don't see anything wrong with expecting someone to put forth a little bit of effort...remember you don't need those figs to play. You don't need to buy an apoth. Call it a perk for the players who love the game enough to put in the hour or 2 of painting for a coaching staff.

Not having all the additional figs is ok, but if you can't even field a proper team after a week or 2 you have a problem. Someone who can't afford to beg, borrow or buy an actual team need to spend their free time collecting cans or panhandling rather than playing BB.

This has nothing to do with loving the game. It has to do with loving miniatures. Around here, we're about 15 coaches in our local league. We all love the game. But only two of us actually own a team. Just because you happen to like the strategy game called Blood Bowl doesn't mean that you like playing with little lead miniatures and painting them. Those are two totally different issues. In our league, every bit about using proper figs is house ruled out, and we're all glad it is.

GW happen to sell paint as well. Do I see a coincedence here?

Well the issue isn't so much that the rule requires figs, or even painted figs, but that it requires painted GW figs. That's the part we most certainly ignore.

A guy can show up with heartbreaker, reaper, mithril, or about 100 other company's minis and it's fine as long as we can tell what they are. I used middle earth ents for my treemen on my wood elf team for years. They were $4 each, compared to about $20 each for GW trees. AND they were on much smaller bases so they weren't such a pain in the arse.
