We had a coach that used varag too and for some reason one guy could never realize that he was a blitzer.

I think it's just a fact of knowing the fluff and realizing that A.) Orcs never stop growing and a normal orc can become larger than a Black Orc and that skin color is the most significant difference physically (Black Orcs are just meaner/smarter) and B.) that Varag is a Star Blitzer.

Some people justa ren't all that interested in the fluff. The human coach in my league ran a team called the Middenheim Steam. He just picked that name out of one of my books. It meant nothing to him and he didn't really want to know about Middenheim.

Now if you've ever been to WEST terre haute, you'd think you'd been transported about 500mi south. that's where we go on field trips to get real life examples of all those jeff foxworthy jokes. a lot of those ole boys across the river are kinda scary.

I'm the coach in question (Varag) and I painted him slightly darker than the other blitzers. Plus I didn't realise his stance is similar to the black orcs. I reasoned that since he's a star blitzer everyone would see him that way, guess i'm wrong.

Well anyway. I think amazones should be colour coded because they are so damn alike

I always play Varag as a Blitzer. He's a great model and he's a Blitzer. It's a no brainer, I would have thought.

really, it isn't a no-brainer... he's as big as and very similarly posed to the bobs, and for coaches who are short figures or looking for variety, he has been a regular choice to fill the blocker role... i've seen it in two or three different teams myself... including one of my own...

...ultimately, you just cannot ever expect that the metal will match the roster... you're going to have people with weird mixes of figures either because of budget, or availability, or personal preference, you'll have poepl with 3e and 2e and third-party figs, you'll have conversions and proxies and all osrts of chaos out there.... the only way to avoid confusion, conflict, and grief is to establish a system for identification, that system can take a myriad of forms, it could be colored rings, it could be dots on the rings, it could be standardized jersey numbers, it could be the position written on the ring.... but it _cannot_ be the miniature itself. there simply is too much variation in the metal being used to ever suggest that metal alone dictate role.

Um ok. How about this one?

Every player should have a number painted onto either his base or his figure. Most figures have a flat, round area that might be good for painting a number on...or, if you can find them, I have heard rumors of decals with numbers on them. Then each coach should have a piece of paper with the players' numbers written on it. Next to the number you could write the player's name, position, skills, current INJ status, # of: comp, cas, TDs, INT, MVPs and total star player points. Call it a "roster" just for fun.
Then, get this, you make a copy of everyone's "roster" (whether at kinko's or on your computer) and you when you play another coach you take out his "roster" along with your own.

That shouldn't be too hard...but now where on earth are we going to find these "rosters"

cute, but not effective... numbers do not provide the effect that is sought here... yes, you'll be able to say "ummm...what was #7" instead of saying "umm... what's the gout with the spike on his head" but you still cannot tell the players without a program... no, base rings do not help you remember which player has pilie on and mighty blow, but it narrows it down to two or three guys, and that speeds the game... base rings have never, ever been about knowing _specifically_ which player is which, it's a way to know _generally_ which player is which so that you can read the scene on teh board a little more quickly and easilly...
