Possible streamlining of skill roll.

Teemu's suggesting prompted a short dialogue between Chet and I about the skill roll. Effectively, if you add a 7's roll, you've made a new chart entry along with the 10, 11, 12 rolls.

The chart starts screaming to be simplified, because you then have a "doubles" rule and the chart has a hole for 8, 9.

A possible solution is to just make a single chart, and remove the doubles from the entire process.

To wit:

Skill Roll:

2-6 = Normal Skill Access
7 = Any Skill.
8-9 = Normal Trait Access or Normal Skill Access
10 = MA increase or Normal Skill Access
11 = AG increase or Normal Skill Access
12 = ST increase or Normal Skill Access

What's gained:

- Increased access to Traits.
- Removed doubles roll mechanic
- Fixed Auto Stat Increase (+AG on Saurus!??!)

What's lost:

- A chart that people already knew.

I'd like to hear discussions on how to add the ageing roll into this chart. It would be idea if we could have a single roll for skills/ageing, IMO.

do we _need_ increased trait results... i mean, was the system put in to limit occurence of abilities or was it put in to limit availability to certain players...

To remove access to certain players.

For example, Mummies should never get Jump Up.

In principle I think it's a fine idea.. with one exception..

on a roll of 10+, roll a D6 (a la Sigurd's rule) with these results..

1/2 +1 MA or +1 AV

3/4 +1 AG

5/6 +1 ST

This was actually discussed a long time ago (before you joined the forum Neo) and even met with Galak's approval...

The reason for this was simple, firstly, it mirrors the injury table pretty well, so gamers get used to the same patterns of dice rolling. Secondly, it gives some representation of players getting tougher as they play more games (up to a max of AV 10 of course!)..

See other post about removing that die roll ;-)

so why not say

2-12 any normal skill roll

plus in addition to the above.

5-6 any skill
7-8 any trait
9 AV +1
10 MA +1
11 AG +1
12 ST +1

I think V_UK's version gives too many chances to get AV+1. Sure all elven coaches (including me ) would love our elves to be tougher, but this doesn't actually seem to fit the spirit of the game. Perhaps an alternative is to make the 10 roll a choice of MA+1 or AV+1, but I'd need to be convinced about it.

(I'm also presuming that V_UK's 7-8 roll is actually any trait available to this player... to avoid Jump Up mummies, etc.)

Cheers,
Martyn

What was wrong with the current system exactly? ;)

uhhhhh..... nothing?

The only thing wrong with the current system, IMO, is that you have to roll for ageing and skill roll seperately. I'm just working with a postulation that was given to me (adding 7's results to the skill roll.)

aging? huh? when did aging figure into this?

i can see some slight value to working out a way to combine the two (maybe roll 2 different colored dice and if the red one comes up x....), but this is the first you've mentioned it...

don't get me wrong, i'm not saying a new skill chart is a bad idea, i'm utterly indifferent to the 7's proposal.... i just son't see much purpose in subtle changes that require new charts...

Why streamline? It's not an in-game mechanic, so it's not gonna speed up the game any.
Even if a team averages two skill upgrades a game over a season, the extra rolls are insignificant.
I'm not sure about increasing trait access either, I like the relative dearth of Frenzy, Stand Firm etc. in 2k1.
Put in in the 'If it ain't broke' camp on this one.

The only posible combination of the skill and aging rolls that I can see would be some variant on making the skill roll some convoluted d66 roll and reverse the tens and ones digit to look up on an aging d66 table... :puke: :puke: :puke:

Wait, I just thought of a way....

You've removed doubles from the table right? Well, put 'em back!

i.e.
First skill causes aging on a roll of double ones.
Second skill causes aging on double ones or double twos.
etc.
etc.

I still don't like it, as you can't get a stat increase and decrease at the same time, :P but it might work.
