Yes, this does mean there are certain positions that have no colour. The major ones being Trollslayers and Witch Elves. Pretty much everything else can be considered one or other of the given categories (Gutter Runners=Skaven Catchers, Dwarf Runners=Throwers etc. Look at the 2nd ed. roster if you have any doubts as to what you should translate your players to. Skaven had 4 catchers then, and Dwarfs could take two throwers instead of Blitzers.)

was blue kickers ever actually published, or was it just the zeitgeist that so many people went in that direction? at this point i assume it's the fact that there were blue bases in 1e deathzone but not in basic 2e that led to the 'process of elimination' blue decision, but i know that i've always done kickers in blue and never saw a 1e deathzone set until a couple of years ago...

???
We always use black for Linemen (as proposed in the basic 2nd ed. Box) and used grey for the Kickers. It seemed natural for us to use grey, being the only coloured base not already taken by any position, for Kickers (and for mutants, but those were obviously different lokking than the average BB player).
There you can see what happens when BB communities evolve without global inter-communication

I just got blue from the other long base color coding thread here on TBB, dunno if it's official, but from what I understand it's what's commonly used.

Who cares whether it's official? If you can tell the difference, fine by me!

Agreed. Just make sure that your entire league uses the same colors for certain positions, and you should have no problems.

Witch Elves are considered Catchers, and Trollslayers are Blockers.

I would go along with that. Most of the non-standard positions can be fitted into one of the standard ones.
BTW, grey for linemen is a bit out of date since the pitch used now is grass and not astrogranite, which was the reason the linemen's bases were grey in the 2ed.
Linemen should not have base rings, just paint them the same colour as the rest of the base, whether it be grass green, dirt brown, desert sand, etc.

Really?!? I'd consider DE Witch Elves=blitzers and Blitzers=catchers and Dwarf Troll Slayers=blitzers and Blitzers=catchers. I know that Dwarves don't normally play a passing game but the AG3 just kinda bumps them into a ball handling position. Thrower's taken, catcher's left.
I'd agree with the comment that, so long as the league is consistent, it doesn't matter.
The ONLY problem I have with basereings is what to do if someone developes a lineman along the lines of a catcher or something. After the players start getting skills, they're a little useless.
