Transporting minis/paint by plane

Post by RickA »

Has anyone done any flying with unpainted (not so much a problem I think), and painted (maybe a problem) minis? I'm going on a long flight soon, and I'd like to take miniatures and paint with me.

However, I am a bit concerned about the low temperatures in the bagage part of the plane. Will this harm my painted minis, or the paint in the pots(GW range) itself?

If it does, I will have to take them as handlugguage, but I'm not sure that's okay (I'm taking Necron Flayed ones, and the have some mighty spiky claws).

thanks for answering

I know anthony_tbbf brought his over in his hand luggage for the BB - I think provided you show them and make it clear you aren't trying to hide them (at the check in desk AND the baggage check) then you should be OK. As for in the hold, it shouldn't damage them as they are not directly exposed to a super cold environment - wrap em in cotton wool if you're really worried.

As for the paints, they should be ok too - after all, the missus' make up creams and stuff don't freeze solid

In general, the cargo hold is a much more pleasant place to be these days. The animal rights groups have come down hard on the airlines because pets are stored there as well. Nowadays, they are pressurized and kept at a decent temperature.

Didn't have any trouble with figs in my hand baggage to Amsterdam or the BB. Only the absolute strictest interpretation of "sharp objects" could be a problem.

I got married on 9th Feb 2002 (sadly we couldn't get 02/02/02 ;) ) so I'd been married for just over a year at the BB.

Why do you ask?

Do NOT put paints that have been opened into your luggage. Alwasy put them in carry on. You have been warned.

The case for the figures is more important than the figures! That way if the packing in the case is good enough they can go near enough any way possible.

If you are transporting paints make sure that you only transport water based paints, as they consider enamel paints a fire risk and as a minimum your paints will be lost.

Carry on or baggage, put your paints in a zip lock bag, they don't seal normally let alone under pressure, or at low pressure.

Any good quality case will be fine for your figs.

Just didn't thought of you as an married man as we met last time. But that comes maybe through the fact, that I am in spite of my venerable age still not married ...

Good to hear that you already met your final misses ... :)

I took my mini's and paints with me in the plane, not in the cargo hold. People behind the x-ray scanner must have wondered what all those bits of metal did in my luggage, but they never asked me to open my bag.

That reminds me of the time I had to transport a map-case (long plastic cylinder to carry rolled-up maps) filled with rock samples; each wrapped in toilet paper and sorted in sandwichbags from Greece...

It looked real dangerous in the X-ray. Luckily I could get my geologists' working license out before they mixed them all up...
