Then what you could do, is have the magnet on the miniature sticking to the inside rim of the base. If you have a magnet inside the ball as well (south side facing out), then the attraction will be strong enought to hold the ball in place even though it is not on the flat of the base.

or ignore the ball and just hit the other team

or model a second team of all your players actully holding the ball and then if they pick it up swap that mini on the pitch
