Dodging away

I had a game against wood elves a week ago and my opponent wanted to dodge away from 3 linerats (like this little sort of image below).

S
E S
S

Now he said, he had a +1 modifier, because he was dodging towards a square where there were NO tackle zones. To me, this is a bit weird, because when I jump away from 3 guys there is no possibility none of them catches me (unless their totally drunken).

So my question is: when an elf (or what kind of player) dodges away, does he suffer the -1 modifier for dodging out of a tackle zone?

You get +1 for attempting a dodge and -1 for every tackle zone that you are dodging into not away from. So an elf AG4 dodges into empty squares on 2+ roll.

I think you got your diagram wrong though. There is no way that the elf can dodge to a square with no tackle zones from there. Did you mean something like this:

S
SEx
S

The elf is dodging into the square marked with x would get 2+

In your diagram it works like this

xSa
yES
zSb

if the elf wanted to dodge to x or z then he would be going into 1 tackle zone so that would be 3+ rolls. If he wanted to dodge to either y,a,b then he would be dodging into 2 opponent tackle zones and would have to roll 4+ That should cover everything up for you.

Double check your rules. There is no -1 modifier for dodging out of a tacklezone. Moving out of a tacklezone simply defines it as a dodge, which defaults at +1. Moving into a tacklezone is at -1 per tacklezone.

Examples

Code: Select all

.....
.2X1.
..AX
.3...
.....

X= Enemy player
A= Dodging player

All Dodge rolls are rolled on the Agility table with a +1 bonus
Penalties for tacklezones are as follows:

Dodging to "1" - 2 TZs, net AG roll -1
Dodging to "2" - 1 TZ, net AG roll evens
Dodging to "3" - 0 TZs, net AG roll +1

An elf would make the 1st dodge on 4+, the 2nd on 3+ and the 3rd on 2+

Minor correction:

you have a -1 modifier per tacklezone, moving into a tacklezone during a dodge.

I think that was given since we were talking about dodging and not about just simply moving into a tacklezone as part of movement. But i get your point.

yes yes yes, the context was implicit ;)

No, but in this perticular game, my opponent could dodge through about ten tackle zones. Because he was never dodging towards a tackle zone (and it doesn't look very logical to me).

Whether it looks logical or not it's how the game's played. Read the rulebook again.

Moving from a tacklezone requires a dodge
Moving from a tacklezone into 1 or more tacklezones requires a dodge with penalties to the roll.

That's it

If you find your opponent making easy dodges past your players you need to work on your positional tactics to ensure his movement lanes are covered.

Some examples:

Code: Select all

..... .....
.X... .X...
...X. .....
..... ...X.
..... .....
The pattern on the left is a good 2 man coverage pattern, in order to dodge through those two players the opponent will need to make 2 dodges - one at -2 and one normal dodge. An AG 3 player has a decent chance of failing this (unless they're coached by Longfang in which case they'll walk on through like it wasn't there.)

The pattern on the right is a more vulnerable 2 man coverage pattern. In order to get past these two players, an opponent can run the diagonal right between them making only 1 dodge roll without penalties (this is often called leaving an "Elf Gap")

In the 2nd instance, despite the fact that the player is dodging from 2 tacklezones, they are dodging into the clear so they recieve no penalties to the dodge. In the 1st, you are forcing them to dodge _into_ 2 tacklezones and so the penalty applies.
