I think the rules are pretty clear that you can not measure a pass before declaring a pass action, but I wonder what you guys think of it. It doesn't bother me, I can eye it up enough or even count it and know what range I may end up in or find that if I am going to pass I am just going to pass. Others may not have that eye and feel if they could measure it maybe they would have chosen a handoff instead. If you didn't want to handoff you can declare pass and move and measure and decide not to actually pass.

Anyway, what is the harm in measuring before declaring the pass action?

pretty sure you can pre measure. anyways me and every one i've played against has been ok with it.

I don't have the rules on me, but I am pretty sure you can't according to the rules. Again I see no reason not to let someone, but personally I see no need to.

You can measure at any time.

There's no rule saying you can't.

Anyway, it's not that hard to remember how many squares each passing range is (or look it up on a summary card).

But "officially", you can only measure using the range ruler after you've declared a Pass action, but can then measure at any point in that players action, as many times as you like.
but with the advent of the range sheets etc, and the number of vets that know the ranges off their heads, I'd just foget about it and allow measuring whenever the coach wants.

Yup. It's not like a Guess Range weapon or anything. The rules state you can measure at any time during the action. Page 8 under Throwing specifically notes that "It is perfectly acceptable to pre-measure the range to several players at any point during the throwing player's move before you declare the target of the pass."

As for problems with measuring after the fact, this can become game changing as that extra GFI can and most likely will make the difference between a 4+ roll and a 5+ roll (not to mention avoiding interception possibilities), so it's beneficial to be able to pre-measure for both sides, but I don't feel there's any negatives that take away from the game in doing this, because you still have to roll for it.
