Optional Hail Mary

It seems that I am bringing up a rules lawyer - here's one I haven't heard before from the eldest.

I am a bombardier with Hail Mary, and am deciding whether to use it or not.

I throw a bomb short pass range with Ag3 and stunty. On a 5+ it is accurate, 3+ inaccurate, 1-2 fumble. I would ideally like it to be accurate, but don't want to fumble. Does the fact that "the range ruler is not used" mean that I have to decide before rolling the dice whether to use it?

Possibly, but open to interpretation?

You can pre measure the range at any point in the player's movement.... But that's not what you are asking.

The HMP skill states it cannot be intercepted, so going on the fact that the intercept roll is before the pass roll you should have already decided whether you are using the skill or not by the time you make the pass roll.

you declare whether you are using it before any dice are rolled..... if you are no intercept, fumble on a 1 only (usually) and always inaccurate.

If not,5+ for accurate, intercept possible.

...and remember Bombs scatter but never bounce!

If you are being pedantic, and given the question I am assuming we are   , the passing rules say "...the coach must measure the range using the range ruler..." (yes, it also say you are allowed to pre-measure) so once you declare which square you are throwing to either you 'must' measure or say you are using Hail-Mary.

Now give him 6 of the best and send him to bed with no cocoa for being so impudent

Throwing Rules...

THROWING
First of all, the coach must declare that the player is taking a
Pass Action. The player can throw the ball to another player in
his own team (or another player in the opposing team if he really
wants to), or simply to an empty square, though obviously the
first of these options will be the most useful – and may keep him
from being attacked by his own team members! The ball may
only be passed once per turn.

Next, the coach must measure the range using the range ruler
(see page 5 for how to correctly use the range ruler). It is
perfectly acceptable to pre-measure the range to several players
at any point during the throwing player's move before you
declare the target of the pass. Once you have thrown the ball,
however, you may not move the throwing player any farther that
turn, even if he has spare MA left.

Thanks Supernanny and all - knew it was the case, but couldn't think why.
