If I have 4 or more players on pitch, I will score when I receive the ball (unless I roll only '1's).
So, against a Strength team I always kicked in the first half: I had a full team to use for defense - which made it easy to sack the ball-carrier and score.
On the second half, I received and then scored in two turns, thus getting two KO-recover rolls, one in the beginning of the half and a second one soon after, to have as many players as possible left for the final defense... where it was a bit harder to sack the ball-carrier and then score

So all in all, I say:
Tactic depends on your own team, on your opponents team, their capability to cause mayhem and the likelihood of their coaches to score quickly.
Basic option, however, is to receive. Kicking is an option when you feel it can give you an advantage, like in the example above.
