I think my point was more along the lines that going to tournaments makes your coaching ability an known and, to a degree, provable quantity.snotsngrots wrote:I'm sure that some of the best coaches in the world have been to a tournament or two but I wouldn't say that is any indication of a good coach. All it does is rank those who have gone to tournaments against others who have been able to go to tournaments as well.
There are many great coaches who will never make it to a tournament. Tournament standing are a known quantity but they don't actually mean that much.
You can say the same thing about playing online - play a lot on the PBEM/FUMBBL leagues and other people will have a measurable way of judging how good you are against varied opponents.
AFAIK Zombie doesn't go, but from the nuggets he occassionally posts, I reckon he's got most of the theory. I suspect if he went to tourneys he'd have a decent NAF ranking.
Especially if he's effectively two players down because they are goal hanging.Grumbledook wrote:Not really, I can score and set up to not let him score if my attempt fails at the same time

Jeez, any coach who just lets your 2 catchers roam around the back field without at least covering them must be worse than I am
. And it won't leave me understrength to go for you catchers, as your 2 men down on defense
Toby, rather than trying to change all the rules under the sun, or post tactics that more experianced coaches shot down and then call them "noobs", play more FUMBBL or (even though you dislike it) PBeM, then see how all these "fantastic" tactics really hold up.

Oh, I thought from his masses of post for improvements to it, he must be on there a bit.

Look you guys are looking at this all wrong. You need to look at this from the Powergaming STARCRAFT point of view. This is the tactical equivalent of the zergling rush.
(For non Starcraft people the "zergling rush" is an "unstoppable" tactic vs. inexperienced players, but complete folly against anyone that knows what they are doing.)

Let me get this straight...
Your whole plan rests on a less than 50/50 chance of scoring and only IF the opponent coughs up the ball. Not to mention you are trying to force the ball loose less the catchers waiting patiently (with nobody harassing them) by the end zone. Is this correct?
Wow, you are a genius...why didn't I ever develop this?

I know this is off topic, but...ianwilliams wrote:AFAIK Zombie doesn't go, but from the nuggets he occassionally posts, I reckon he's got most of the theory. I suspect if he went to tourneys he'd have a decent NAF ranking.
I'm thinking of going to a few tournaments in the future, but right now i simply don't have the money, and the closest tournament is about 6 or 8 hours of car away (is that the distance from Montreal to Toronto?)
I would think my biggest weakness right now is positional play (actually, i suck at it). However, i've been playing mostly bashy teams recently (chaos dwarves, lizardmen, etc) and that has improved my play a lot in that department. Still some ways to go though.

Its a shame the distances are so big - I'll almost certainly never get to go to a tourney outside of Europe. At least I hope to go to ~4 per year from now on.Zombie wrote:I'm thinking of going to a few tournaments in the future, but right now i simply don't have the money, and the closest tournament is about 6 or 8 hours of car away (is that the distance from Montreal to Toronto?)

Yes, the old diffrence in perceiving distances:
Whenever Americans are visiting Europe they are eager to make a little trip over here: London, Paris, Berlin, Prague, Vienna and then Venice in just 4 days. Maybe that's just the size of Texas but in our heads it's like saying that you travel to New York, Buenos Aires and Tokyo in one go!

You guys are nuts. You put less mileage going to those 6 cities, then I do driving to my parents and back on a 3 day weekend. Blanchprez invited me to a "local" small BB tourney, which is roughly 800 miles (1300 km) and that is not even crossing state lines.narkotic wrote:Yes, the old diffrence in perceiving distances:

I wouldn't think of making the London, Paris. . . trip in 4 days, but that is just because I like to see things while I am there. But if was in Europe, I would be heading all over the place, all the time.
Not to mention (now it has been a while since I have been over there) the trains are so much cheaper over there than here. Over here it is cheaper to fly from one end of my State to the other. There you could take a train for less than even that.
