Well they still pay for it...most of those nations' passenger rail systems are heavily subidized by the national governments, meaning that they pay a lot for the rails, but it's all hidden in taxes. :)

I wouldn't call trains here cheap.

My wife recently had to go from her place of work to London, a trip of about 50miles. It cost here company somewhere around £40 - £50 for a single return.

And in many places our bus services are crap, and cost way to much.

And the government want more people to use public transport

I am surprised they charge so much in the UK. Those were the bumpiest least comfortable trains in all of Europe. Does some of that train fair go to subsidize chiropractors?

Well, around here I pay about 80.9 pence a litre for diesel. I don't know what that works out in dollars/gallon, but it's a hell of a lot more than you pay.

Yeah I know we pay a lot less than you for gas, I would go into explanation but fear i'd get reprimanded for political discourse...some of it is borderline. Economics is never JUST economics it seems. :)

US gas prices vary by region and grade, but standard unleaded gasoline costs me about $1.20 a gallon currently. It's cheaper here in the midwest because of ethanol, a corn-based gas product. I would do the conversion math...pounds-dollars, gallons-litres, but it's time for me to go so I will leave that to somebody else if they care to do the math.

Yeah and you are probably able to walk to the market!

We are not like that. Our towns weren't built on old quaint villages.

I live in Iowa buddy, that means if I want to visit my friend in the next town I have to bring a change of clothes and a map because I'm going to be gone all weekend!
And most of that weekend will be spent behind the wheel of a car that is movine 80 miles an hour.
So yeah, we get better gas prices. We use more.

Ah, well there's your solution then.

All of you move to 3 or 4 states (I'll let you decide which), build some new towns at sensible distances, and use the rest of the country as a large car park

Hey..how come I've been posting about train fares and petrol prices on a whole different thread? :o
FWIW, our cheapest unleaded 'gas' works out around $4.75 per us gallon.
Average high street prices would bump that over $5.

Yes but Darkson had the idea for us all to move out to the coasts in this thread...though, I'm not sure what we should do when Europe and Russia want their corn and soy beans!
