Dwarf defensive alignment?

I have just started playing with the Dwarf and could use some ideas for a good defensive alignment.
I have chosen to start with
2 runners
2 blitzers
7 longbeards
on the pitch
I'm mostly looking for a defense against fast teams (primary skaven)

what kind of team layout does the skaven guy use?
that would help to decide the front line
I use a 3 44 quite a lot to great success.

If you're playing starting skaven use this formation:
Code: Select all
. . . .|. L . L . L .|. . . .
. L B .|L . R . R . L|. B L .
. . . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
. . . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
Lack of block or +ST will make it practically impossible for them to break multiple recievers through.
Shame you didn't get slayers, this setup is
really nice when you've got some slayers.

I would blitz the longbeard in the widezone, with a storm vermin, and then I would form a half cage...
Code: Select all
. . . .|. L . L . L .|. . . .
. . B .|L . R . R . L|. B L .
. . L .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
. . . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
. S . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
G . . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
. G . .|. . . . . . .|. . . .
S = Storm Vermin
G = Gutter Runner
And then I would put some tacklezones on the blitzers!

You won't get a 2 die block that way without having to dodge with the SV to get him downfield and you may block off your route through in order to get the assist in.
You will also leave one player right on the sideline, you will have to stack one side very heavily to get the players down there which gives the runners room to sweep across and interpose. It's a risky play.
Set up your board and run it. It's a low percentage option.

If you put all your guys right near the LoS, like Marcus suggested, then all the Skaven has to do is put one TZ on the Blitzer, then get an assist on the Longbeard, then Blitz the Longbeard with 2 dice and hope for at leat a Push. Then the skaven will run half his team down the sidelines, and if he's smart put them in a way to spread out TZ, assuring himself a 2 turn score. If you need to prevent the score this isn't the way to do it.
But really that isn't what matters at all. Heck, let him score in 2 turns; ignore the ball and pound on everything in range. Then, when he kicks to you on your second turn you have the entire half ahead of you to smash some skavens. Hopefully by halftime half his team will be out of the game, that is what Dwarves do best.

Did you actually set up a board and try that? Without guard or ST4 players every skaven that runs down the sideline will need to make a dodge roll to get through.
Even then, due to the fact you can only have 2 players in the widezones you will have a hard time getting "half your team" downfield if you have to run them in from the centre of the pitch first. What players do run through are easily contained from a sideline drive like that.
Plus your assisting player is left right on the sideline, easily blitzed off, closing down the lane to the recievers.
It's a bit flippant to refer someone to the old Dwarven 2-1 victory when they ask for defensive sets. Way too much is made of that tactic; it's conservative and is reasonably successful but it's hardly the be-all and end-all of Dwarven tactics. The set I described above is an illustration of one way you can play an aggressive and proactive defence with Dwarves and force turnovers.

The thing I've found that works the best is to estimate how far his receivers will penetrate into your half. Then place your long beards there in force. Try to maintain a strong line if you can. (IE a couple longbeards up there)
Longbeards are your saviors against elfs and skaven but you have to place them effectively or they might as well be turds.

I only get 1 die when I blitz the longbeard, and then I hope for a push!
When the dwarf is pushed back, then I don't have to dodge.
But parhaps I am wrong marcus, so could u explain?

I wouldn't set up that close to the line, Marcus. Unless you drop back in your first turn, you're asking for your defense to be exploited. Skaven don't need to penetrate your half with receivers. They'll overload one side of that formation and march into the endzone.
Anyway, it's easy to open a hole in that formation. You go through the line. Knocking over one of the front three or pushing a couple of them out of the way opens up a chance for an assist on at least one of the back four. It should be easy enough to open up a lane 5 squares in from either side line. After that, the skaven player pins down your best pursuers and gets ready to celebrate the easy touchdown.
