I'am in a little french league (we use 3rd Ed rules), and i've just played my first match against orc... the score was 2-2. But one of my lineman is dead and an other one will miss next match and i won 90 000Gp.

So know i have 1 WD, 8 linemen available for the next match and 1 other lineman which couldn't play. So my question is what can i do? My next match will be against Undead (1 Vampire, 2 Mummies, 5 skeletons, 2 ghouls, 2 wights, 1FF and 2RR) so...

I thought about:

- buy 1 lineman and no apo and i will play with 10 players.
- buy 1 apo and hire one freebotter (linemen) and i will play with 10 players
- hire 2 freebooters (2 linemen) and no apo so i will play with 11 players
- restart my team (1 WD, 10 Line, 2RR, 8FF) but i will lost my experiences and my 9FF.
- change my team (orc) because there are 5 strong teams (chaos, dwarf, dwarf, orc, undead, chaos) and 2 elves team (1He and 1DE).

That's a hard one.

As I see it there are 2 options

a) Buy a line elf
b) Buy an apoc

Don't spend money on freebooters, you'll need every penny to keep replacing dead players and your league has a way to go yet. Whatever you do you'll need a recovery game - so keep away from the opposition.

My choice would be: buy an apo and save money
You will suffer on next match (100% defensive, with many fouls to reduce your handicap and taking advantage from opponent's errors), but then you will be able to buy new players.

I played the Woodelves right from the start so I might help ya out I hope.

I agree with Ian that freebooter are not the right way to go for you (you need to build up potential again and freebooters only drain your team-treasury).

Personally I would buy the lineelf and start with 10 players. That would be enough to win a game against undead and winning shouldn't be you priority for your next game. More important is keeping your player alive for the next game. If you stay out of trouble the next game you could go without the apo for the next game.

I recommend you buy an apothecary. Why? Because if luck takes further turns against you an apothecary will slow the attrition of your team. Buying additional players will increase your chances of winning, but you will be royally hosed if you suffer any more deaths. An apothecary is a hedge bet against that. You have to avoid going into a player death spiral at all costs. Every time you use your apothecary to mend a player's death, you've in essence gained a player.

I was in a similar position not all too long ago. I suffered 2 deaths in my inaugural game with my rookie Wood Elves, leaving me with 1 WD and 7 line elves for my second game. My league plays 2 preseason + 12 season games and "restarting" the team is not an option. I quickly learned the value to keeping your players alive (it was my first time not using Orcs). I suffered exactly one casualty in each of the following 3 games. Each of these casualties was a death (6), and each of these times my apothecary failed (1). Regardless of my apothecary's incompetency, I still think I made the right decision in buying the apoth instead of a player after my first game.
