Wood Elf line up (your first 1000K)

Post by Smurf »

After looking about a bit at different, if not odd, start ups what do you choose for the cool first mil?

BTW feel free to set up similar threads for other teams.

My preferred option is:

1 Thrower
2 Wardancers
1 Catcher
7 Line Elves
1 Apoth

960K (banking for 40K for something important)

You could ditch the Catcher

1 Thrower
2 Wardancers
8 Line Elves
1 Apoth
1 Reroll
990K (10K in the bank)

I have seen other set ups and thought that's odd. I like my Throwers and they are slow and steady point scorers, so I like them fresh out of the packet so to speak. The Wardancers are a must because they are great. The line need some chance to develop and the Catchers can do the TD scoring with great ease. Not a fan of the Treeman, it does not reflect my style of play.

2 Wardancers
1 Catcher or Thrower (or neither)
8 or 9 Linemen
2 TRR counters
10k or 30k bank

What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

Starting teams need at least 2 rerolls post LRB5 imo. After a bit of experimentation, I think I now prefer the thrower to start than a catcher. Although the catcher has 2 inbuilt rerolls and the thrower just one, the catcher is only ST2, somewhat negating his dodge advantage when getting hit (and he also seems to be more of a target), and with a thrower you can get an early Leader reroll. I also think catchers are better run in packs, so save until you can afford 2-3 of them in one buying spree.

Unless you are in a elfball league, I also think a tree is well worth it. If all he does is soak up LOS hits, then he has done his job. I think that with the proliferation of Claw POMBers in long leagues, he might not be worth replacing once you have developed some blodge/wrodge fenders for the LOS.

So why do people avoid the apoth?

Isn't it some kind of insurance incase something bad happens?

It's a 50% chance of keeping a player on the pitch, or saving a player from a perm. When you have super skilled teams, it becomes important, if only to keep an important KO on.

With rookie players, journeymen are almost as good as the rest of your team(as rookie teams aren't rr heavy anyway), and there's rarely anyone critical enough it's worth apoing.

Think of it as a choice...apo, or a babe. At low TV, the babe is better (as the odds of a KO are higher than those of a casualty, and you can use it on every KO). At high TV, the fact that you can possibly save a superstar from death is far more useful(or keep that turn 1 KO'ed WD on the pitch).

He would be my first purchase, but to begin with, it's not worth sacrificing a reroll for (which afterall cost double after the league has begun). Also, if you have a really bad start and get a wardancer crippled/killed, you might as well just start again (if the league allows it). A couple of journeymen for the LOS is fine.

With any luck you should be able to buy him after the 1st game.

You can lose MVP to the Journey men.

I know the points for the team will come in, but the 5pts for MVP is a good way for a lino to skill up after a glorious toss ball to catcher route.

Apoth is essential but I would play with 4catchers and 2wd if I could. The 8lino 2wd 1cather is the closest you get so that what I play

If you got balls 4catxhers 2wd and just 1rr I think is what I used for a bit in lrb6. It's great but does seam to crash after 10 games so the first option is better long term. Starting with 6 dodge personal rerolls you can play with just one rr. It's weak as attrition hurts the catchers so I found it's the least durable squad ever! Still I can win pretty easy with 6dodge and 2 block at 100 rating

That is my preferred standard lineup, but I also think the 4 catcher start, dropping both rerolls and ending up with a 30k bank, is good too. 6 dodge players is really hard for any team other than dwarves or CDs to play against. Or compromise on 3 catchers and 1 reroll.

My standard start is:

2 wardancers
3 catchers
1 thrower
6 linemen
1RR/Apo (depending on my mood at the time)

It's a bit brave, but elves do not need rerolls, particularly with all that dodge.

My maths might be wrong but isn't the below somewhat >1000k?

2 wardancers 240k
3 catchers 270k
1 thrower 90k
6 linemen 420k
1RR/Apo 50k
1070k

Just the 5 linos I suppose :)

You would struggle to lose with that starting "eleven" :D

That sounds like a great personnel package for the classic 4-4-4 formation. Kind of feeling burned on that formation; it looks so good on paper, but every play loses five yards.

In a short league I would like to suggest the following:

1 Wardancer
1 Thrower
3 Catchers
6 Linemen
2 Re-rolls

It is not as strong to start as the two Wardancer builds but after buying just one possition player you have a strong and well balanced team. In contrast all the 2 Wardancer builds I've found lead to a slow period of development as you try to save up for Catchers and don't have enough time to skill them all up before the final.

It is a high risk option but it has worked out for me so far.
