Skaven team development - advice needed

Post by el Superbeasto »

So – my Skaven team has been smashed to smithereens (three dead, two injuries that require sacking  ) the first two matches (1 lost, 1 won), but after match two I had my first skill-up on a GR – and a double skill-up, even – which resulted in +AG and Block.

Now, after match three (another victory and this time no dead players or even injuries!) I have four more skill-ups to decide. One was a double 6 on a GR :orc: , so I’m not going to need help on deciding that, but the other three are up for discussion. I’m especially interested in hearing peoples’ thoughts on the GR that rolled a double and please consider the two GRs that already skilled up.

As written, I have played three matches and it’s an eight (nine or ten if you get to play-offs) match league with possibility of keeping the team for a subsequent league.

Here’s my current roster. All help and words of wisdom very appreciated!
  • Thrower: ?(standard)
  • Blitzer: ?(standard)
  • Blitzer
  • Gutter Runner
  • Gutter Runner: +1 Ag, Block
  • Gutter Runner: ?(double)
  • Gutter Runner: +1 St
  • Lineman
  • Lineman
  • Lineman (Journey)
  • Lineman (Journey)
(Oh, and the opponents are: Underworld, Human, High Elf, and Nurgle. I'm playing everyone twice and have played the first three once already.)

Gutter doubles, I usually like Horns. Horns/Wrestle/Strip Ball makes for a great sacker. Alternately, Big Hand/ Two Heads both boost the core functions of the gutter as well.

Depends whether you want to make him a stripper or a retriever. I'd advise not using the +ST or +AG as strippers, it's too hazardous. My gut would say: +ST - Sweeper/Carrier. +AG - Retriever/quick scorer. Doubles - Stripper.

I like Hito's advice on the doubles and the player roles. Thrower, move him down whatever track you see him on: Accurate for me, but Block isn't crazy. The Blitzer, Mighty Blow.

What is Nuffle's view? Through a window, two-by-three. He peers through snake eyes.
What is Nuffle's lawn? Inches, squares, and tackle zones: Reddened blades of grass.
What is Nuffle's tree? Risk its trunk, space the branches. Touchdowns are its fruit.

Defnitely give the Runner Horns. Then wrestle like Hitonogashi suggests, but I'd consider tackle instead of strip ball next. I think it pairs better with wrestle and is more useful overall.

You definitely want to give that Blitzer MB like Slater suggests but I would strongly recommend waiting until your second skill for that. Consider guard in the short term. Then MB -> PO. Skaven teams don't have access to a lot of Strength skills and guard is the most desperate of them to obtain.

Block on the thrower hands down. Makes him more survivable. Any skill development you take after this will only be enhanced by this skill.

Thanks for all the advice so far. Here's my own thoughts on the subject.

Thrower: Block. As written, I've sustained quite a few casualties so far, so increased survivability is a big plus. Also, I have the AG5 GR who can do some heavy passing, and block will make the thrower more useful overall.
Second choice would be Accurate.
Blitzer: I'm thinking MB. I'm meeting Nurgle next so I'm going to be under-powered no matter what. Might as well cause some havoc. Also, it may help him skill up faster.
Second choice would be guard.
GR: His next skill is in all likelyhood going to be Wrestle (since my AG5 GR already has block and the ST3 GR will be given block, too, if he survives that long. ST3 and wrestle combines well, but I don't want to leave him on the ground for fouling... :o ) so he could benefit from horns. Guard is always tempting, but since he will be given wrestle next, it just doesn't seem to fit.
