Chaos Dwarf vs. Lizard men

Post by Boss »

I am taking my 3-game old Chaos Dwarfs into a game vs. a strained lizardman team tomorrow ... I am having trouble figuring out how to line up against those bad boy Saurus blockers.

He has 5 Saurus (two has block) - one krox and 5 skinks with no apo.

I have 6 CDB's (one with guard, one with Leader), 3 Hobbo's (Block on one, Sure hands on another), 2 BC's (one has block the other dodge - I know, not the best of choices) and the mino with block already.

On offence I will do my usual sweeping breakthrough thing for the BC's to exploit. When kicking off - that's my problem. Obviously it is my ambition to stomp the skinks into the ground - dwarves were pretty much designed for that. However, my Blockers usually hold the line for me ... if I use them there I wont have many free to go skink-hunting ... but I dont really want to put my hobbo's there either - they are too fragile.

usually I line my Blockers up like this to force my opponent to commit as many players as possible to the line of scrimmage :

D . . D . . D
.................
.................
D . . D . . D

Then I have a hobbo and a Bull centaur in each wide zone - and the mino just behind the center CDB. If I use this setup, most likely he'll have 3 bad-ass blitzers to break deep into my zone giving good cover for his skinks in scoring distance.

Any suggestions how to set up against the Lizards ?

How about this

Code: Select all

____|__DGD__|____
____|_______|____
_BH_|D__D__D|_HB_
____|_______|____
____|___M___|____
G = guard
D = chaos dwarf
B = bull centaur
M = mino

Tips
Keep the mino away from the Krox. Use him as a sweeper for those 3 dice blocks on skinks.

Tie up the Saurus use the dodging BC against saurus without block - this ought to let you hit the skinks with the Blocking BC (set him up for 3 dice if possible) or a CD.

The three front-dwarves will still get blocked 2 dice requiring just 3 saurus. But that's unavoidable I guess. I guess I should have a good chance to wear these guys down if I can just catch the darn skinks ... once I get them reduced in number I should be fine.

thanks man

Sauri without block go down a lot, block/skull-block just happens too often.
Your dwarfs are too slow to chase skinks, so use hobgoblins to do that.
Your dwarfs can also keep the Sauri occupied for the whole game, since they are quite durable.

I dont know about that ... I think I'll keep a couple of dwarfs in the backfield. They should be able to cover most of the width of the field - at least in the scoring range of the skinks. Dwarves are so much better at knocking over Skinks that hobbo's are.

I agree with that (about using Dwarfs against Skinks) just keep in mind that those pesky little things go anywhere they want, and are really, really fast.

I also agree with Ian Williams' advice about using your mino as a Skink-Sweeper, though I would not mind using him to block/blitz a saurus or Krox (Horns!!! :D ) in range either.

Finally, on Defense, I would not put my Guard on the LoS; he will just get blocked by a Str4 Saurus, or a Krox, and if I were the Lizzie coach, I'd foul him and try hard to take him out.

Guard would be useful when you had more of it, but right now I'd rather keep him back and then move him in where needed rather than put him in the "Hit-me Spot" right from the beginning of the Drive.

That's pretty much my plan. I'll have the guarding dwarf at center of the 2nd line of blockers - that way he can go pretty much anywhere to find the battle ... even helping out in the widezone. I'll keep the Hobbo's and the BC's in the widezones to cover that approach and the Mino as a central deep sweeper.

Redfang - would you put the dwarves at the LoS so close ? I am leaning towards splitting them up with at least one space between them.

I would probably split them up. 1 square, definitely not 2!

But I would expect them all to go down in the 1st turn, so it doesn't matter too much anyway...

Whether or not to split up players on the LoS is one of the things I still haven't figured out yet, though. I think you would be better off asking the other people here for advice on that matter

Well - here's my advise on that then - usually I prefer to split them up. Even with 2 hexes between them. I've found that it's a solid strategy, particularly against 'standard' ST3 teams. It can tie down up to 6 players from the opposing team if he wants to knock them over or at least push them away. That limits the options for backfield coverage - not to mention breaking down one of the flanks.

It's just my first game - ever - against a lizardman team ... and only my 4th ever game as a Chaos Dwarf coach. And it appears my standard defensive tactics gameplan is somewhat questionable against them.

What other team(s) did you play?

Besides you only keep 3 players occupied plus 1 per failed block, the rest can still move after assisting...

You will need a lot of dwarfs to stop only three skinks, sincethey can move twice as fast.

As has been said above, it is better to use the minotaur against the skinks. I would add some hobgoblins just to make sure.
Keep forcing the sauri to make blocks with your dwarfs, they will go down eventually.

If the Dwarfs are in the right position they can still stop the Skinks. Also; they have better chance of doing so (both blocking and tackling) because of Tackle. The mino is only marginally faster than the Dwarfs, and there is only one mino. Therefore it doesn't really matter what the mino blocks/blitzes but blitzing skinks does give a better chance for SPP.

Don't get stuck onto using only the mino or only the Dwarfs against skinks; blitz the skink that needs it most with the player(s) that have the best chance of succeeding and get the others into tacklezones; preferably of tackle players

Since making my Blood Bowl comeback in the fall I was playing skaven before switching to Chaos Dwarves ... in the old days many moons agoI preferred the alround nature of the human team (spiced up with stars). I didn't leave the skaven as exposed and on their own like I did/do these dwarves.

I know the other guys can move afterwards, but traditionally he has to set up 6 if he wants a 2-dice block ... and who knows what happens on the kick off dice roll. However the chances that he needs more than one block per dwarf to knock him down is roughly 50% ...

I know the Skinks are fast - but since I set up the Dwarves 3-4 steps behind the LoS they should be able to get there. And the Mino will still be around - it just happens that the Dwarves have better chances of knocking them over per die.

So much for fanzy tactics.
4 players of mine went awol for the first kickoff (handicap roll) ... and I killed his Kroxigor in my first turn ... so he paraded around scoring in turn 7. Just enough time for me to equalize before the end of the first half ... and run away 3-1 winner with my dodging BC scoring all 3 TD's picking up a skill - and a niggling injury. damn :-?

put your dwarfs next to each other on the line of scrimmage, put your guard player in the middle directly behind them i.e.:

xxx
-g-
